Source and Sink Removal Effects on Yield Attributes and Yield in Mungbean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of source and sink removal on yield in high and low yielding mungbean genotypes. Four levels of defoliation (0, 8, 16, and 33%), four levels of deflowering (no deflowering, deflowering of all opened flowers borne up to 10^th or 15^th or 20^th nodes in a raceme), and four levels of depodding (no depodding, depodding of all pods for 5 or 10 or 15 days after anthesis) were employed. Defoliation had no significant effect on seed yield in high yielding genotype while it reduced the yield in low yielding ones under 16% and 33% defoliation. Deflowering up to 10^th nodes had no significant effect on seed yield though deflowering beyond 10^th nodes in a raceme reduced the seed yield in high yielding mungbean genotype; low yielding genotype exhibited reduced seed yield under any level of deflowering. Depodding up to 5 days from anthesis had no negative effect on seed yield although depodding beyond this period reduced the yield depending upon the magnitude of depodding. The results suggest that mungbean plant, especially high yielding genotypes can compensate seed yield to moderate source loss and partial sink loss.

Objectives:

To test the effect of artificial removal of source and sink at reproductive stage on yield of mungbean.

Methodology:

Three field experiments, Exp. 1, Exp. 2 and Exp. 3 were conducted at the experimental field of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, Bangladesh in 2009, 2010 and 2011, respectively. The first experiment was conducted with two mungbean cultivars, BINA moog 6 and BINA moog 7. The three field experiments were designed in a split-plot design with 3 replicate blocks where cultivars were in main plot and defoliation treatments were in sub-plot. Seeds were sown in lines 30 cm apart and 10 cm between plants. Recommended fertilizer doses and cultural practices were done as and when necessary. Four defoliation treatments were employed at flower initiation stage (40 days after sowing) by removing the top most leaflets at different degrees as follows: i) control (no leaflet was removed), ii) 8% defoliation: one quarter of the top most leaflet was clipped off from all the leaves in the plot, iii) 16% defoliation: half of the top most leaflet was clipped off from all the leaves in the plot, and iv) 33% defoliation: top most leaflet was clipped off from all the leaves in the plot. In the second experiment, four deflowering treatments were employed by removing all opened flowers borne on up to the certain nodes in a raceme as follows: i) control (no flower in raceme was removed), ii) Deflowering from 1st to 10th basal node (DF₁₀), iii) Deflowering from 1st to 15th node (DF₁₅), and iv) Deflowering from 1st to 20th node (DF₂₀). In the third experiment, four depodding treatments were employed by removing all pods in the racemes for the specified period of time after anthesis as follows: i) control (no pod was removed), ii) Depodding for 5 days (DP_5d), iii) Depodding for 10 days (DP_10d), and iv) Depodding for 15 days (DP_15d). All data were analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

Source and sink removal alters biomass and seed yields in mungbean. Mungbean plants have the ability to compensate yield under partial to moderate loss in source and partial loss in sink. High yielding genotypes, generally, have higher compensatory ability to source and sink loss compared with low yielding genotypes.
