Effect of Planting Patterns and Different Nitrogen Levels on Yield and Quality of Tomato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to study the effect of planting patterns and different nitrogen levels on plant growth, fr uit yield and quality of tomato . The experiment consisted of three planting patterns viz., 1, 2 and 3 plants per hill and five nitrogen levels viz ., 0, 100, 150, 200 and 250 kg N/ha. Both factors have had significant inf luence on growth,yield and quality of tomato. Single plant per hill produced the maximum number of the largest fruits along with the highest fruit yield per plant, but the least amount of total and marketable yield as well as vitamin C content. 250 kg N/ha increased all the yield contributing characters producing the highest yield, but showing the lowest vitamin C content. The combined effect on three plants per hill and 250 kg N/ ha produced the highest total yield ( 100.29 t/ha) and also the marketable yield (84.61 t/ ha).

Objectives:

To study the effect of planting patterns and different nitrogen levels to achieve the highest yield and quality of tomato.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during the period from October 1989 to April 1990 on a sandy-loam soil with a pH 6.6, organic matter content 1.8% and total nitrogen 0.09% at the Horticulture farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. The experiment was laidout following a randomized complete block design with three replications consisting of three planting patterns e.g. 1 plant/hill (p1) , 2 plants/hill (p2) and 3 plants/hill (p3) and five nitrogen levels viz. 0, 100, 150, 200 and 250 kg N/ha which ere designated by N0, N1, N2 , N3 and N4 respectively. The seedlings were planted at a spacing of 75 x 60 cm in an unit plot of 3.0 x 2.4 m. Nitrogen fertilizers were applied as urea, triple superphosphate and muriate of potash were used as a source of phosphorus and potassium at the rate of 200 kg P₂0₅ and 150 kg K₂0 per hectare, respectively. Five plants from a unit plot were selected at random and the data in respect of number of flowers and fruits per plant and weight of fruits per plant were determined. Random samples of 20 marketable fruits were taken from each replication and measured for individual fruit weight, fruit length and diameter. Total and marketable fruit yields were recorded plot-wise. The selected plant shoots , and random fruit samples from each of the treatments were collected, and dry weight of shoot and dry matter content of fruits was measured per 100 g basis. Vitamin C content was estimated by visual titration method based on the reduction of 2.6 dichlorophenol indophenol dye. All data were statistically analyzed and the differences among the treatments were evaluated by DMRT. Linear regression analysis and correlations were computed for yield and quality of tomato and presented in tables and figures.
