Performance of five BARI released mango varieties viz. BARI Aam-1, BARI Aam-2, BARI Aam-3, BARI Aam-4 and BARI Aam-8 was evaluted at ARS, Raikhali in Rangamati Hill District at 2013-14. During the flowering season all the plants were in 6 years old. All parameters under study were significantly different from each other. The plant height varied from 5.2 m (BARI Aam-8) to 2.9 m (BARI Aam-3). Date of first flowering varied from mid December (BARI Aam-1) to early February (BARI Aam-8). The earliest fruit harvest (last May) was observed in BARI Aam-1 followed by BARI Aam-2 (mid June) and BARI Aam-8 (early July), whereas the latest was recorded in BARI Aam-4 (mid July). Among the studied varieties maximum number of fruits per plant (288.30) and yield (20.01 t/ha) were observed in BARI Aam-8. The lowest number of fruits per plant (96.33) and fruit yield (5.32%) were found in BARI Aam-1. The heaviest fruit (413.10 g) was recorded in BARI Aam-4 as against the lightest (189.50 g) in BARI Aam-3. Maximum edible portion (84.50%) was found in BARI Aam-4 and minimum (70.51%) in BARI Aam-1. Maximum TSS (22.67%) was recorded in BARI Aam-3 and minimum (16.33%) in BARI Aam-2.

  1. To study the and adaptability of BARI released mango varieties in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.
  2. To select suitable mango varieties for Chittagong Hill Tracts.

The experiment was carried out at the existing six years old mango orchard of BARI Aam-1, BARI Aam-2, BARI Aam-3, BARI Aam-4 and BARI Aam-8 at the hill valley of Agricultural Research Station of Raikhali in Rangamati Hill District during 2013-14. The experiment was set in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) maintaining 6  × 6 m spacing. The soil was fertilized with well decomposed cowdung @ 15 kg/plant, 230 g N, 42 g P2O5 and 54 g K2O per plant per year. NPK were applied in the form of urea, TSP and MoP, respectively. The fertilizers were applied in two equal installments in a year. First installment was applied during May and the second in September.  Intercultural operations like weeding, irrigation, mulching etc were done as and when necessary. Data on pant growth, phenology, fruits/plant, individual fruit weight (g), fruit volume (cm3), stone weight (g), edible portion (%), TSS (%) and yield  were taken duly. Data were statistically analyzed using MSTATC program.

Based on number of fruits per plant,  individual fruit weight, fruit yield,  percent edible portion with higher TSS content of fruits, BARI Aam-8 was noted the superior overall other varieties under Chittagong Hill Tracts. Though, BARI Aam-2, BARI Aam-3 and BARI Aam-4 were found promising for their satisfactory yield as well as BARI Aam-1 may be suggested as an early variety in Chittagong Hill Tracts.
