Relationship of Cosmopoliteness of the Farmers with Their Opinion Leadership

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted to have an understanding of the relationship of cosmopoliteness of the farmers with their opinion leadership. Data were collected from all 84 farmers of the village Banguri under Kaliakoir thana of Gazipur district. Fourty-two percent of the farmers had medium cosmopoliteness compared to 38 percent having low cosmopoliteness and 20 percent high cosmopoliteness. Fourty-one percent of the farmers had no opinion leadership while 32 percent had low opinion leadership and 27 percent high opinion, leadership. Cosmopoliteness of the farmers had a positive relationship with their opinion leadership.

Objectives:

Methodology:

Farmers of Dhaljura union under Kaliakoir thana of Gazipur district constituted the population for this study. Out of twenty-two villages of the union, one village named Banguri was randomly selected. All the 84 farmers of this village constituted the sample for this study. It was necessary to interview all members of a village In order to determine opinion leadership by sociometric technique. Hence all the farmers of the selected village were included in the sample rather than selecting a proportion of the farmers from a number of villages. Data were collected from the farmers by interview procedure by using an interview schedule. The collection of data took 36 days. Measurement of Opinion Leader- ship: Opinion leadership of the farmers was determined in four areas, namely, agriculture, politics, family affairs and religion. One sociometric question was asked to determine opinion leadership in each of the four areas. Four scores were computed for each respondent to determine his opinion leadership in the four areas. Agriculture opinion leadership scores were computed on the basis of the responses of the farmers to question "to whom you go for advice when you face any problem in agriculture? One point was assigned to a person for each citation of his name. The total number of citations of the name of a particular farmer by the fellow farmers indicated his agriculture opinion leadership scores. Opinion leadership scores for politics, family affairs and religion were computed by following the same procedure on the basis of responses to the respective sociometric questions. Overall opinion leadership score of a farmer was obtained by summing his opinion leadership scores in agriculture, politics, family affairs and religion. Data were collected from 84 farmers. One farmer, therefore, could receive citations from a maximum of 83 farmers. He might also get no citation from any farmer. The opinion leadership score for any of the four areas could, therefore, range from 0-83, a indicating no opinion leadership and 83 very high opinion leadership. Consequently, the overall opinion leadership scores could range from a to 332. Measurement of Cosmopoliteness: Cosmopoliteness of the farmers was measured on the basis of their visits to seven categories of places. A cosmopoliteness score was computed for each farmer by using the following' scale:

Achievement/Findings:

Farmers with cosmopolite orientation visit places outside their village and thus come in contact with new people and new ideas. Such farmers generally become receptive to new ideas and things. Cosmopolite farmers generally possess considerable opinion leadership.
