Genetic Variation of Morpho-physiological Characters in Wheat as Influenced by Nitrogen Levels

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Yield and yield contributing characters were studied in ten wheat genotypes at Field Laboratory of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh using three levels of nitrogen (0, 220 and 320 kg urea/ha) during the year 1988- 89. Genotypes, nitrogen and genotype x nitrogen interactions were significant for physiological maturity, yield and components of yield. These characters except physiological maturity showed moderate to high phenotypic and genotypic coefficients of variation. Moderate to high heritability estimates were obtained for all the characters except biomass.

Objectives:

To estimate variation of yield, tiller production, biomass and other yield related characters and also to estimate broad sense heritability and genetic advance of these characters.

Methodology:

The wheat viz. Kanchan, Aghrani, Sonalika, Punjab 81, UP 262, V1287G II, Veery 7, Tape- zara, A 253-1, and A 142-2 were studied in the present experiment. They were grown at three levels of nitrogen. The experiment was designed in a factorial randomized complete block with three replications. The plot size was 2m x 1.2m with plant spacing of 20 cm between rows and 5 cm between plants of the same row. Urea was applied @ 0, 220 and 320 kg urea /ha and other fertilizers' were applied @ 135: 60: 120 kg/ha of TSP, MP and Gypsum respectively. The total amount of TSP, MP and gypsum were applied as basal dose at the time of final land preparation. Urea was applied into three equal instalments after 20. 40 and 50 days of sowing. Weeding, thinning, irrigation and other intercultural operations were done when needed. Data on total tillers/m². effective tillers/m², grains/spike, 100 grain weight, biomass/m². harvest index, phy- siological maturity and yield/m² were recorded. The data were analysed for testing the effects of nitrogen at different levels. The phenotypic variation, its different components, heritability and genetic advance were estimated according to the formulae as suggested by AI-Jibouri et al. (1958). Johnson et al. (1955) and Comstock and Robinson (1952) respectively.

Achievement/Findings:

Among the characters, the heritability estimates for yield/m²was found low but the genetic advance was high. This indicated that direct selection on yield would not be proper for the improvement of such genotypes and due weightage may be given for proportionate improvement of different yield components. Lower heritability values of 30-32% for grain yield.
