Evaluation of Local Elite Mango Germplasm at Rangpur

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Six mango germplasm namely MI Bur-001, MI Bur-002, MI Bur-003, MI Bur-004, MI Bur-005 and MI Bur-006 were evaluated at ARS, Burirhat, Rangpur during 2013-14. All the germplasm performed excellent growth condition. Among the germplasm, only 4 germplasm flowered in 2^nd week of February. Maximum plant height (8.06 m), base girth (1.06 m) and canopy spread in case of east-west and north-south (7.60 m and 7.58 m) was recorded in MI Bur-001. Average fruit weight was maximum in MI Bur-001 (336.7 g) and minimum in MI Bur-002 (188.2 g). Maximum skin weight, stone weight, fruit length and breadth (77.0 g, 54.0 g, 10.26 cm and 7.70 cm, respectively) were found in MI Bur-001, while minimum skin and stone weight (40.66 g and 38.66 g) were obtained from MI Bur-005 and fruit length and breadth (8.60 cm and 6.56 cm) were obtained from MI Bur-002. Maximum edible portion was found in MI Bur-005 (71.19%) while minimum was found in MI Bur-002 (59.68%). The germplasm MI Bur-001 showed maximum TSS (21.6%) and MI Bur-005 showed minimum TSS (14.6%). Maximum number of fruits per plant (191.9) were recorded from MI Bur-005 whereas maximum yield per plant (63.97 kg) were obtained from MI Bur-001.

Objectives:

To study the performance of elite mango germplasm in Rangpur region.
To developed mango varieties for Rangpur region.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at ARS, Burirhat, Rangpur during 2013-14. Six mango germplasm namely MI Bur-001, MI Bur-002, MI Bur-003, MI Bur-004, MI Bur-005 and MI Bur-006 were included in the experiment. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Grafted saplings of one year old were planted in July 2002 and 2006 at a spacing of 6 m x 6 m. A single tree of each germplasm constituted the unit of replication. The trees were fertilized with recommended doses of manures and fertilizers according to BARI Krishi Projukti Hatboi (5^th edition). Intercultural operations such as weeding, ploughing and irrigation were done as and when required. Necessary actions were taken against pests and diseases as and when needed. Data on tree age, plant height (m), base girth (m), canopy spread (m), time of flowering, time of harvesting, average fruit wt.(g), skin wt. (g), stone wt. (g), fruit length (cm), fruit breadth (cm), edible portion (%), TSS (%), number of fruits/plant, yield/plant (kg) were recorded and analyzed statistically.
