An experiment was conducted at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jessore during rabi seasons of 1990-91 and 1991-92 to assess the feasibility of growing sunflower as inter crop with groundnut. Seed yield of each crop was the highest in monoculture practices for both the years. The result revealed that inter cropping was profitable compared to sole cropping of either groundnut or sunflower. Among the treatments one row groundnut alternated with one row sunflower gave the highest groundnut equivalent yield,  land equivalent  ratio and marginal rate of  return (%) over two years.

To know the potentiality of groundnut-sunflower intercropping and also to find out suitable plant population and planting geometry for groundnut-sunflower intercropping system.

 

The experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute. Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jessore during rabi seasons of 1990-91 and 1991-92 . The treatments were compared in randomized complete block design, replicated thrice and having a unit plot size of 3.2m x 6.0m. The treatments were compared as follows: 1. Sole Sunflower SNF), 2. Sole Groundnut (GNT), 3. One row groundnut in between two rows sunflower ( 1G:1S). 4 . Two rows groundnut in between two paired rows sunflower (2G :2S). and 5. Three rows groundnut in between two paired rows sunflower (3G:2S). The spacing maintained for sole sunflower was 40.0cm x 30.0cm and for sole groundnut 40.0cm x 15.0cm. In case of intercrop situation the population density of sunflower remained the same but it was variable for groundnut. Fertilizers were applied @ 100- 100- 100- 30-4 kg/ ha of NPKS and Zn for sunflower and 20- 80-80-20-3 NPKS and Zn kg/ha for groundnut, respectively. An additional 20 kg/ ha of N was applied as top dressing in sunflower rows in intercropped plots. Seeds were sown on 18.10.90 and 27. 10.91. One weeding and one irrigation were done in all treatments at heading ( 50%) stage of sunflower was harvested on 23.1.91 and 3.2.92 and groundnut was harvested at the end of March, 1991 and in the 2nd week of May,  1992. Seed  yield of both crops were calculated on whole plot basis. Ten plants of both crops were selected randomly to record data on yield components . Yield components data were recorded on plant height, number of pod/plant and pod yield/plant for groundnut and plant height, diameter of head, number of seed/head and seed yield/ plant for sunflower. Collected data were statistically analyzed. Equivalent yield were calculated on the basis of value of respective crops during the period.
