In Situ Evaluation of Local Mango Germplasm at Rangpur Region

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Fruits of four local mango germplasm were collected and were evaluated during 2013-14. Among the four germplasm MI Bur-007 and MI Bur-010 were harvested earlier (4^th week of May) and the fruits of the germplasm MI Bur-008 and MI Bur-009 were harvested later (1^st week of June). Fruit bearing habit was medium to high in all the germplasm. Average fruit weight ranged from 195.6 to 297.2 g. Maximum fruit weight was obtained from MI Bur-009 (297.2 g) and minimum from MI Bur-008 (195.6 g). Maximum length (9.95 cm)was recorded from MI Bur-010 while minimum (8.40 cm) from MI Bur-007. Maximum breadth (7.52 cm) was recorded in MI Bur-009, while minimum breadth (6.42cm) was recorded from MI Bur-010. Maximum TSS was found in MI Bur-009 (20.0%) and minimum in MI Bur-007 (18.5%). The percentage of edible portion varied from 55.64 to 67.00. Maximum edible portion was obtained from MI Bur-007 (67.00%) and minimum from MI Bur-010 (55.64%).

Objectives:

To study the in situ performance of elite mango germplasm for collection and evaluation.
To developed mango varieties for Rangpur region.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at ARS, Burirhat, Rangpur during 2013-14. Fruits from four local mango germplasm namely MI Bur-007, MI Bur-008, MI Bur-009 and MI Bur-010 were collected from homestead and mango orchard under Mithapukur Upazilla of Rangpur district through survey and interview. Five fruits were collected from the selected tree of each germplasm at proper harvesting stage. Fruits were harvested through hand picking for avoiding injuries. After harvest fruits were stored at room temperature for collecting data. Data on time of harvesting, bearing habit, average fruit wt.(g), length of fruits (cm), breadth of fruits (cm), TSS (%), skin wt.(g), stone wt. (g), pulp wt. (g) and edible portion (%) were recorded and analyzed.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering fruit weight, yield, TSS and edible portion, the germplasm MI Bur-007, MI Bur-008 and MI Bur-009 perform better in Rangpur region and may be selected for collection, conservation and future utilization through ex situ evaluation.
