Effect of Split Application of N-fertilizer on Growth and Yield Attributes of Mustard

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during October 2002 to 30 January 2003, to study the effect of split application of N-fertilizer on growth and yield attributes of mustard. The experiment comprised of four nitrogen levels viz., control (no nitrogen fertilizer applied, full dose of urea (240 kgha^-1) applied at 25 DAS, full dose of urea at 2-equal splits applied at 25 and 35 DAS and full dose of urea at 3-equal splits applied at 25, 35 and 45 DAS and three mustard genotypes viz., Agrani, Safal and Sambal, The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. Application of urea with 2-equals produced the tallest plant, the highest number of branches (primary and secondary) plant^-l, leaf and leaf area plant^-1, pod plant^-l and pod length, number of seeds pod^-1, 1000-seed weights, shell weight plant^-1, seed weight plant^-1 and TDM plant^-1. The interaction between varieties and split application of N also significantly influenced all the parameters studied except pod length. The highest seed yield plant^-1 was obtained from Sambal by applying 240 kg urea in 2-equal splits at 25 and 35 DAS.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to assess the effect of split application of N-fertilizer on growth and yield of mustard varieties and to determine the level of split nitrogen for maximizing yield of mustard.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was conducted at the pot yard of the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during 30 October 2002 to 30 January 2003. The experiment comprised of four nitrogen levels viz., control (no nitrogen fertilizer applied, full dose of urea (240 kg ha^-1) applied at 25 DAS, full dose of urea at 2-equal splits applied at 25 and 35 DAS and full dose of urea at 3-equal splits applied at 25, 35 and 45 DAS and three mustard genotypes viz., Agrani, Safal and Sambal, The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. TSP, MP, gypsum, zinc oxide and borax were applied at the rate of 0.56, 1.20, 0.48, 0.87, 0.04 and 0.07 to maintain the dose of 170, 70, 125, 5 and 10 kg/ha of urea, TSP and MP, respectively. On 30 October 2002, seeds were sown in pots. Analysis of variance was done according to the design with the help of computer package MSTAT-C (Freed, 1986). The mean difference among the treatment was tested with Duncan’s Multiple Range Test.
