Influence of Iaa and Ga3 on Growth and Yield of Soybean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out with soybean (Glycine max) at Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh from December, 2000 to March 2002, to investigate the effect of foliar application of different concentrations of IAA and. GA₃ of 100 ppm significantly increased plant height, number of branches, number of leaves, number of flowers, number of pods, number of seed/plant, seed yield/plant, 100-seed weight, seed yield (t/ha), leaf area index, total dry matter, CGR and RGR. IAA at 100 ppm also increased plant height, number of flowers, number of pods, number seed per plant, seed yield/plant, seed yield (t/ha), CGR and RGR over other concentrations (50 and 150 ppm) of IAA. IAA at 150 ppm increased number of branches, leaves and leaf area index. Double spraying at 20 and 42 DAS together performed better than single spray at 20 DAS or at 42 DAS. Double spraying with 100 ppm of GA₃ and IAA produced the highest plant height, number of branches, TDM, LAI, CGR, number of flowers, number of pods, number of seeds/plant, seed yield, 100-seed weight and harvest index. On the otherhand, single spray at 42 DAS with 100 ppm of GA₃ and IAA produced the highest LAI.

Objectives:

The objectives were to study the effect of various concentrations of IAA and GA₃ in modifying the morphological, and yield contributing characters of soybean.

Methodology:

An experiment was carried out with soybean (Glycine max) in the Experimental field of the Department of Crop Botany, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh from December, 2000 to March 2002, to investigate the effect of foliar application of different concentrations of IAA and GA₃ on the growth, morphological features and yield contributing characters of soybean. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The size of each plot was 1m × 1 m and the plots were spaded one day before planting. Well decomposed cow dung was applied to the plots @ 6 tha^-1. Fertilizers were applied 50, 150 and 50 kg ha^-1, respectively. The seeds of soybean were sown in rows made by hand plough on December 20, 2001. The distance between rows and seeds were 25 cm and 10 cm respectively and 2 seeds were placed in each point at 2-3 cm depth from the soil surface. Data on morpho-physiological attributes and yield were recorded. Analysis of variance was done following randomized complete block design with the help of computer package MSTAT-C (Russell, 1986). The mean difference among the treatment was tested with Duncan’s Multiple Range Test.

GA₃ of 100 ppm significantly increased plant height, number of branches, number of leaves, number of flowers, number of pods, number of seed/plant, seed yield/plant, 100-seed weight, seed yield (t/ha), leaf area index, total dry matter, CGR and RGR. IAA at 100 ppm also increased plant height, number of flowers, number of pods, number seed per plant, seed yield/plant, seed yield (t/ha), CGR and RGR over other concentration (50 and 150 ppm) of IAA. IAA at 150 ppm increased number of branches, leaves and leaf area index. Double spraying at 20 and 42 DAS together performed better than single spray at 20 DAS or at 42 DAS. Significant timing differences were observed in terms of the morphological, physiological and yield contributing characters studied. Double spraying with 100 ppm of GA₃ and IAA produced the highest plant height, number of branches, TDM, LAI, CGR, number of flowers, number of pods, number of seeds/plant, seeyd yield, 100-seed weight and harvest index. On the otherhand, single spray at 42 DAS with 100 ppm of GA₃ and IAA produced the highest LAI. The present study clearly showed that 100 ppm of GA₃ treated plants performed better than control and other treated plants.
