Growth Regulator Mediated Effect on Growth Yield Attributes, Fruiting Pattern and Yield of Okra

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out in the field laboratory, Department of Crop Botany, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh from March to July 2007 to investigate the effect of different concentration and combination of NAA on growth and yield attributes of okra (BARI Dherosh-l). NAA of different concentrations viz., 0, 50, 100 and 150 ppm were imposed at seed soaking; seed soaking+ foliar spray; only foliar spray with a control where only water was used. Result showed that in most of the cases the interaction between seed treatment and foliar spray spray with 150 ppm NAA was the best for plant height, number of leaves plant^-1, number of branches plant^-1, total dry matter (TDM), leaf area plant^-1, number of flowers plant^-1, total number of fruits plant^-1, fruit length, green fruit yield (ton/ha), time of flowering to fruit setting, fruit setting to harvesting, number of seeds fruit^-1. The result of the experiment revealed that seed treatment + foliar spray with 150 ppm NAA had positive regulatory effect on morphological, growth, yield and yield attributes of okra.

Objectives:

The objectives were to study the effect of NAA on growth and yield attributing characters of okra and to find out the optimum concentration of NAA for bettet growth and yield.

Methodology:

An experiment was carried out in the field laboratory, Department of Crop Botany, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh from March to July 2007 to investigate the effect of different concentration and combination of NAA on growth and yield attributes of okra (BARI Dherosh-l). NAA of different concentrations viz., 0, 50, 100 and 150 ppm were imposed at seed soaking; seed soaking+ foliar spray; only foliar spray with a control where only water was used. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The size of each plot was 1m × 1.5 m and the plots. A space of 1 m and 0.75 m were left between the blocks and plots, respectively. Well decomposed cow dung was applied to the plots @ 6 tha^-1. Fertilizers were applied 90, 120 and 100 kg ha^-1, respectively. The seeds of okra were sown in rows of raised beds on December 20, 2007. The distance between rows and plant to plant was maintained 40 cm and 30 cm, respectively. The first crop sampling was done at 30 DAS and continued with an interval of 15 days until maturing 105 DAS. Data on morpho-physiological attributes and yield were recorded. Analysis of variance was done following randomized complete block design with the help of computer package MSTAT-C (Russell, 1986). The mean difference among the treatment was tested with Duncan’s Multiple Range Test.
