Effect of Plant Growth Regulator on Morpho Physiological Attributes, Yield, Protein and Oil Content of Sesame

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A piece of research work was conducted the Field Laboratory of Department of Crop Botany, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, since February to May, 2007 to investigate the effects of cycocel at 100, 200, 300 and 400 mgL-1 with a control (distilled water) on morpho-physiological attributes, yield, protein and oil content of sesame variety (Binatil-1) and to find out the optimum concentration of cycocel on motpho-physiological attributes, yield, protein and oil content of sesame. Results of the experiment revealed that the cycocel at 400 mgL-1 produced highest number of leaves plant^-1, total dry matter, crop growth rate, number of flowers plant^-1, number of capsules plant^-l, number of seeds capsule^-1, 1000-seed weight, seed yield (ton ha^-1) and highest per cent of harvest index. The cycocel at 400 mgL^-1increased seed yield and other morpho-physiological attributes, protein and oil content compared to other treatments. Plant height was decreased by cycocel application.

Objectives:

The objectives were to study the effect of cycocel on morpho-physiological attributes, yield, protein and oil content of sesame and to determine the suitable concentration of cycocel that can influence the above parameters.

Methodology:

A piece of research work was conducted the Field Laboratory of Department of Crop Botany, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, since February to May, 2007 to investigate the effects of cycocel at 100, 200, 300 and 400 mgL-1 with a control (distilled water) on morpho-physiological attributes, yield, protein and oil content of sesame variety (Binatil-1) and to find out the optimum concentration of cycocel on motpho-physiological attributes, yield, protein and oil content of sesame. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The size of each plot was 1m × 1.5 m and the plots. A space of 1 m and 0.75 m were left between the blocks and plots, respectively. Well decomposed cow dung was applied to the plots @ 6 t ha^-1. Fertilizers were applied 125, 150, 50 and 125 kg ha^-1of urea, TSP, MP and gypsum, respectively. The seeds of sesame were sown on Februar 22, 2007. The distance between rows and plant to plant was maintained 25 cm and 10 cm, respectively. The first crop sampling was done at 40 DAS and continued with an interval of 15 days until 85 DAS. Data on morpho-physiological attributes and yield were recorded. Analysis of variance was done following randomized complete block design with the help of computer package MSTAT-C (Russell, 1986). The mean difference among the treatment was tested with Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).
