Evaluation of Herbicides in Direct-seeded Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Effect of herbicides, Machete, Coal, Ronstar, 2, 4-0, loxynil + 2, 4-0 and Oxadiazon + 2, 4-0 with or without one hand weeding, were compared with that of hand weeding at three locations in a randomized complete block design having three replications of direct-seeded upland rice. Machete produced the highest yield of 4.61 t/ha. Ronstar, Coal, Oxadiazon + 2, 4-0 and post emergence application of 2, 4-0 with one supplemental hand weeding was comparable with Machete and were superior to hand weeding. All the herbicides controlled most of the weed species except Cynodon dactylon.

Objectives:

To determine the efficiency of herbicides used in direct- seeded upland rice with or without hand weeding.

Methodology:

Four herbicides, Machete (Butachlor), Goal (Oxyfluorfcn), Ronstar (Oxadiazon) and 2, 4-D with that of hand weeding (HW) with respect to grain yield of direct-seeded rice were evaluated at two locations,Joydcbpur and Sripur. BR20 seeds were sown at 90 kg/ha on 17 March at Joydebpur and on 03 May at Sripur. Fertilizer was used @ 60-40-40 kg/ha of N, P₂0₅ and K₂0 as urea, triple super-phosphate and muriate of postash respectively. Depending on the performance of these studies another experiment was conducted during the following aus season, 1988 at BRRI, Rajshahi with slight modiffications in the treatments. In this study Machete, Goal, Ronstar, 2, 4-0, loxyni + 2, 4-0 and Oxadiazon + 2, 4-0 with or without one HW were compared. The design, number of replication and plot size were similar to those of 1987 trial. At Rajshahi, BR20 seeds were sown @ 100 kg/ha on 08 May. Fertilizer rate and time of application was similar to that of in 1987 except that one third of N was applied as basal. In 1987, all herbicides were sprayed immediately after sowing. Machete and Goal were applied @ 2 and 0.12 kg a.i./ha respectively but other herbicides viz, Ronstar and 2, 4-0 were applied @ 1 kg a.i./ha each in both the years. One litre water was used for spraying herbicides per plot. In 1988, all herbicides except 2, 4-0 were sprayed immediately after sowing. Mixed herbicides were used @ 2 l/ ha. In 1988 we sprayed 2, 4-0 20 days after sowing. Labour requirements for spraying and weeding were recorded for partial economic analysis. However, the price for herbicides except Ronstar, Machete and 2, 4-0 was not available for comparison. First HW was done 10 days after weed emergence (DAE) at Iaydebpur and 20 DAE at Sripur. Second HW was done at 38 DAE at Joydebpur and Rajshahi and at 48 DAE at Sripur. One supplemental HW in the herbicide-treated plot was done 45 days after sowing (DS) at Rajshahi, Herbicide toxicity, particularly of Goal and 2, 4-0 was observed but no quantitative information was recorded. Grain yield and plant height was recorded.
