Pot experiments were conducted at the pot yard of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, Bangladesh, during the period, February to May 2006 and 2007 to investigate the effect of defoliations on morphological characters, yield and yield attributing characters in mungbean. Experiment consisted of nine defoliation treatments viz., control, 2, 3, 4, 5 leaves removal from base and from top out of 7 leaves, during flowering stage. Results showed that leaf area and total dry biomass plant-1, number of raceme bearing nodes plant-1, number of flowers plant-1, reproductive efficiency, yield attributes and seed yield were decreased with increasing defoliation both from the base and top except the basal two leaves defoliation. But the decrement of seed yield was not significant up to basal three leaves defoliation. Contrarily, all these traits increased over the control in basal two leaves defoliation. The decrement due to defoliation was greater in top defoliation than the basal defoliation. These results indicate that upper leaves contributes more assimilate to the sink than the basal leaves. The basal two leaves defoliated plants produced the highest seed yield  due to greater morpho-physiological, reproductive and yield contributing characters whereas the lowest in top five leaves defoliated plants.

To investigate the extent to which and what portion of leaf removal during early reproductive stage affects seed yield in uniculm mungbean together with identify the yield components responsible for yield reduction.

 

The two pot experiments were conducted at the pot yard, Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, Bangladesh in Kharif-I (February-May), season of 2006 and 2007. A completely randomized design with four replications was used in both studies. A high yielding mungbean genotype viz., MB-35 was used for the investigation. The branches were clipped off weekly so that the plant can develop as uniculm canopy structure. The pots were filled with 12 kg sandy loam soil considered proper for mungbean cultivation. The fertilizers were applied at the rate of 18.4, 16.0, 30.0 and 7.2 kg ha-1 for nitrogen, phosphorus, potash and sulphur, respectively in form of urea, triple superphosphate, muriate of potash and gypsum. Two plants pot-1 were kept two weeks after germination for growth and development, which denoted a replication. The nine defoliation treatments were employed at the beginning of opening of flowering phase (45 days after sowing). During the application of treatment, the plants beard seven leaves on the mainstem. The treatments were: i) Control (no leaf removal); ii) removal of two; iii) three; iv) four; v) five leaves from base of the plant; and, vi) removal of two; vii) three; viii) four; and ix) five leaves from top of the plant. Flower count began from the date of opening of first flower and continued at every day until flowering ceased. During harvest the leaf area, yield and yield components, dry matter production and its partitioning into plant parts were recorded. The total dry matter plant-1 was estimated by summing dry matter of leaves, stem, and roots per plant. Reproductive efficiency was calculated from the ratio of the number of pods at maturity to the total number of opened flowers multiplied by 100. The collected data were analyzed statistically.

Leaf area, the most important source for dry matter (DM) and sink production since higher degrees of source (leaf) removal in the canopy decreased LAI and DM production. Defoliation not only decreased source size but also sink production resulting in lesser pods and seed yield. However, such reduction in TDM and seed yield plant-1 was not significantly affected between control and basal 2-3 leaves defoliation. The seed yield increased over the control in two leaves defoliated plant due to superiority in yield contributing traits. This indicated that uniculm mungbean plant could tolerate basal three leaves loss in the canopy during reproductive stage.
