Profitable Cropping Pattern for Rainfed High BARInd Tract of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The rainfed new cropping pattern Green manure -Transplant Aman Modern Variety -Chickpea + Linseed was tested for five years at Farming Systems Research (FSR) site. Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARIL Saroit, Godagari. Rajshahi and one year at Multilocation Test (MLT) site Nachole. Nawabganj against farmers' existing dominant rainfed cropping pattern Broadcast Aus (Local) -T.Aman (Local) -Fallow. It was found that the grain yield of single modern variety (BR14) rice of new pattern was (4.25 ton/ha) which was more than the total grain yield of two local rice crop in farmers' pattern (3.53 ton/halo Further. a mixed crop of chickpea + linseed could successfully be grown after T.Aman cultivar BR14. The farmers could get additional net benefit of Tk. 23.10 l/ha/year from the new pattern by incurring additional cost of Tk. 8.268/ha/year. It was also found that the benefit-cost ratio (BCR) of the new pattern is much higher (3.29) than that of farmers' existing.

Objectives:

To develop a new cropping pattern for the High Barind Tract of Bangladesh and to compare the cropping pattern with the farmers' existing pattern.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted for five years at FSR site, Saroil, Godagari, Rajshahi (from 1984-85 to 1988-89) and one year (1989-90) at ML T site, Nachole, Nawabganj. Randomised Complete Block Design (RCBD) was followed with five dispersed replications. The new cropping pattern GM-T.Aman (BR14)- Chickpea + Linseed was tested against farmers' existing dominant pattern B. Aus(L)-T. Aman(L)- Fallow under rainted condition in Amnura soil series. The unit plot size was 750 square meters. However, the yield data were collected from 3mx2m in sample area and 3 samples from each plot. Dhaincha (Sesbaniaaculeata) was used as green manuring crop in the new pattern. The varieties used for rice in new pattern was BR11 (short duration T.Aman MV) and in farmers' pattern were Purba shaita (B.Aus local rice)' Raghushail (T.Aman local rice) for testing the patterns. Rabi mixed cropping in new pattern, Rajshahi local variety of chickpea and linseed were used. In new pattern hectare gross return. Benefit-cost ratio was calculated dividing the gross return- by the total cost of production. T-test for paired samples was done for net return only.

Achievement/Findings:

It can be concluded that the new cropping pattern GM-T. Aman (MV) - Chickpea + Linseed is much profitable than farmers' existing pattern. Moreover, the new pattern has many other advantages over the existing pattern. So, to solve the problems of soil fertility and moisture unavailability after T. Aman harvest and to sustain rice, pulse and oilseed production, people in the High Barind Tract of Bangladesh should follow this pattern.
