A total of 180 day old broilers were fed ad libitum on either of 4 iso-nitrogenous and iso- energetic diet up to 42 day of age. Three diets contained 0 (control diet), 5 and 10% STD. While 4th contained 10% STD, + 1.5% Polyethylene glycol (PEG 6000). The objectives were to observe the effect of feeding STD on the broiler performance, to ascertain whether treatment with PEG inactive the deleterious effect of tea tannin in broilers and finally to recommend a suitable level of inclusion of STD to formulate economic diet for broilers. Broilers gave similar growth performance on all diets. But, apparently highest growth performance was appeared on 5% and depressed on 10% STD and 10% STD + PEG diet than that on control diet. The dietary levels of STD did not influence the dressing parameters of broilers. The manual procedure of using PEG may not be effective to correct the STD tannin related depression on the performance of broilers. It may be concluded that addition of 5% STD in diet may not have any detrimental effect on broiler performance.

To observe the effect of feeding STD on the broiler performance and dressing parameters of broilers. To ascertain whether treatment with Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) inactive the deleterious effect of tea tannin in broilers and finally to recommend a suitable level of inclusion of STD to formulate economic diet for broilers.

A total of 180 day old Arbor Acres broiler chicks were fed ad libitum to 6 weeks of age on either of 4 different iso-nitrogenous and iso-energetic diets: containing 0, 5, 10% STD and 10% STD+PEG. The proximate analysis of STD was performed. Polyethelene glycol in solid form was weighed out by the electronic balance, 1.5g PEG was diluted with 100 ml of water in volumetric flask manually. Then 400 ml of diluted mixture was spread on 1 kg of dried STD and mixed properly using both hands. Treated STD was air dried to reduce moisture at a minimum level. Then STD was ready to mix with broiler ration. The birds were randomly assigned to four dietary treatments and each treatment had three replication containing 15 birds in each. Three groups were fed diet containing 5, 10% and 10% STD+PEG, while the rest one continued to receive control diet until termination of the experiment. The nutrient requirements we re satisfied as per recommendation of the BDS, 1998. Birds were allowed to adapt for first three days supplying the control (0% STD) diet. Broiler starter ration was offered lip to first 4 weeks and for next 2 weeks broiler finisher was fed. Fresh and dry rice husk was used as a litter at a depth of 7.5 cm. Floor space per bird was 867 cm2. All pens were properly cleaned, washed, dried and disinfected by phenyl mixed water. Dry mash feed and clean drinking water were supplied ad libitum to the broilers. Required feeding and drinking space were provided according to the number and age of the birds in each replication. Proper management procedures were carried out during the whole experimental period. Initial and weekly body weight and feed consumption of the birds were recorded replication wise. Mortality was recorded daily when occurred. Temperature and humidity were recorded thrice daily. Production cost and profit for producing broilers on different diets were calculated for comparison. At the termination of the experiment, one male and one female were selected randomly for determination of the meat yield characteristics. Birds were starved for 12 hours before slaughter, they were weighed, slaughtered and allowed to bleed for about 2 minutes and scalded in hot water (51 to 55°C) for about 100-120 seconds. After removal of feathers, head, shank, viscera, oil gland, kidneys and lungs, dressing yield was calculated by subtracting blood, feathers, digestive tract, shank from the live weight. The other organs or parts of the dissected birds were weighted out separately and recorded. The length of intestine was also recorded. Data were statistically analyzed in a completely randomized design. The dressing yield parameters were for a 2 (sex) x 4 (diets) factorial experiment in a CRD. An analysis of variance partitioned variances of dressing yields data into diet (D), sex (S), D x S and error. The significant differences were isolated calculating least significant differences (LSD).

Considering the body weight, feed utilization, feed cost, dressing yield and profitability it may be concluded that STD can safely be used up to 5% level in broiler diet without any deleterious effect. However, manual procedure or using Polyethylene Glycol will not be effective to inactivate STD tannin related depression on broiler performance.
