Performance of Off-season Mango Germplasm at Chittagong Hill Tract

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to evaluation two off-season mango germplasm MI Kha 001 and MI Kha-002 at the Hill Agricultural Research Station, Khagrachari during 2013-14. The Germplasm MI Kha-001 had the maximum plant height (3.20 m). The tree habit was spreading type and the maximum canopy spread 2.25 m at north-south and 2.38m at east-west was recorded in MI Kha-001. Both the germplasm flowering twice a year. The full blooming period was June 13 and January 14. Irrespective of germplasm fruit harvesting period was December and May, respectively. Among the germplasm fruit set was done in MI Kha-001. The germplasm MI Kha-001 produced 66 fruits from January flowering and the 18 fruits from June flowering. From June flowering single fruit weight was found 560 g, but at January flowering that was 280 g. Total Soluble Solids (TSS) was noted the highest in fruits obtained from June flowering (19.0%).Regardles of fruiting edible portion was found 66.61%. The highest yield (18.48 kg) was obtained from fruits of January flowering while the germplasm gave 10.08 kg yield at June flowering.

Objectives:

To study the performance of the off season bearing potentiality of mango under Hill tract of Bangladesh
To developed off season mango variety for hilly areas.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Hill Agricultural Research Station, Khagrachari during 2013-14. Two germplasm of mango were included in this study. These were MI Kha-001 and MI Kha-002. In addition each plant was fertilizer by 100g urea, 100g TSP, 100g MOP, 50g zinc sulphate and 50g boron with irrigation at the end of April and September. Intercultural operations such as weeding and ploughing were done in the month of September, December, March, May and July, Regular irrigations at 15 days and 30 days interval were applied. Befor penicle opening and at the pea stage, respectively, Ripcord @ 1 ml and Tilt 250 EC@ 0.5 ml per liter of water applied twice to control hopper and anthracnose. Sumithion 1ml/L and feromon trap were applied to control fruit weevil and fruit fly respectively. Necessary actions were taken against other pests and diseases as and when needed. Twenty fruits were collected from the selected tree at proper harvesting started through hand picking . After harvest fruits were stored at room temperature for collecting data. Data on tree growth as well as quantitative and qualitative characteristics of fruit was recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

In view of yield and fruit quality characteristics of fruit as well as off season production the germplasm MI Kha-001 were found promising as off-season cultivation of mango at hilly region.
