Effect of Seed Treatment and Foliar Application with Growth Regulator (naa) on Growth and Yield of Sesame

Objectives:

The objectives were to study the effect of NAA on morphological attributes and yield of sesame and to estimate the optimum concentration of NAA for higher yield of sesame.

Methodology:

An experiment was carried out at the Field Laboratory of the Department of Crop Botany, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh from February to May 2007 to investigate the effect of NAA on morphological, growth and yield contributing characters of sesame (Binatil-1). Different concentrations o f NAA viz., 0, 50, 100, 150, 200 ppm were applied as seed treatment, foliar spray and seed treatment with foliar spray at 25 DAS. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The size of each plot was 1m × 1m. A space of 1 m and 0.75 m were left between the blocks and plots, respectively. Fertilizers were applied 125, 150, 50 and 125 kg ha^-1of urea, TSP, MP and gypsum, respectively. The seeds of sesame were sown on February 23, 2007. The distance between rows and plant to plant was maintained 25 cm and 20 cm, respectively. PGR was applied in the form of fine foliar sprays by hand sprayers. The spraying was done at 25 DAS. The first crop sampling was done at 40 DAS and continued with an interval of 15 days until 85 DAS. Data on morpho-physiological attributes and yield were recorded. Analysis of variance was done following randomized complete block design with the help of computer package MSTAT-. The mean difference among the treatment was tested with Duncan’s Multiple Range Test.

Achievement/Findings:

In most of the cases, growth and yield of sesame were increased with increasing of concentration of NAA. Most of the cases NAA at 200 ppm concentration was found to be the best for plant height, number of leaves plant^-1, number of flowers plant^-1, number of capsules plant^-1, number of seeds capsule^-1 and yield (t/ha). Therefore, the NAA at 200 ppm as seed treatment + foliar spray has positive regulatory effect on morphological growth, yield and yield contributing attributes of sesame.
