Effect of Weed Infestation Regime on the Growth and Yield of Transplant Aman Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh to evaluate the different weeding regime on the performance of T. Aman rice. There were nine treatments including a control. Ten weed species belonging to three families infested the experimental plots. Among them six species were under the family Gramineae. The highest absolute density and relative density of weeds Jaina (Fimbristylis miliacea) were found in the no- weeding treatment. Different weeding conditions exerted marked influence on the yield and yield contributing characters. The highest yield (3.84 t/ha) was obtained in weed-free condition and the lowest was of 1.37 t/ha in no-weeding condition. The yield loss due to unweeded condition was 64 per cent.

Objectives:

To see the influence of weeding regimes on weed growth and performance of Transplant Aman rice.

Methodology:

The experiment was con- ducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from August to December, 1991 on a sandy loam soil. BR11 was used as a test variety. The treatments of the study were: bb) Weed-free throughout the season (T1) ii) Weed-free upto 30 days after transplanting (DAT) (T2) iii) Weeding at 30 DAT (T3) iv) Weeding at 40 DAT (T4) v) Weeding at 50 DAT (T5) vi) Weeding at 60 DAT (T6) vii) Weeding at 70 DAT (T7) viii) Weeding at 80 DAT (T8) ix) No weeding throughout the season (T9) The land was fertilized with 80, 60 and 40 kg of N, P205 and K20 per hectare, respectively. Thirty-five day old seedlings were transplanted on 20 August, 1991 with two seedlings per hill maintaining 25 cm X 15 cm spacing. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with four replications. The unit plot size was 10m². The infesting species of weeds in the experimental plots were identified and their population per m² was counted. A Quadrat of 1 m X 1 m was placed at random in each plot and all the weeds(species wise) and the crop plants inside the quadrat were counted. For weed count, three samples were taken per plot just before weedings in different treatments and at harvest in control plot and the average data were used.

Achievement/Findings:

Weeding is an important factor for the production of T. Aman rice. The study showed that the yield loss due to weed infestation was about 64 per cent. It was also found that the earlier weddings were more effective than the later weedings. Production cost may be minimized and the grain quality may be improved by weeding in the earlier stage of the growing period of T. Aman rice. Thirty to forty days period might be considered as the critical period of weeding for transplant Aman.
