Laying Performance and Egg Quality Characteristics as Affected by Different Animal Protein Sources

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Dietary substitution of fish meal by broiler offals and DCM (a commercial protein concentrate) on performance and egg quality characteristics of Shaver 579 layers were studied in a 16-week long trial. Results indicate that dietary replacements do not exert any significant effect on body weight, feed consumption, feed conversion, egg mass and livability. Egg production and egg weight were affected (P<0.01) by diets. Feed cost/kg egg produced was reduced (P<.001) by feeding broiler offals or DCM. Diet had no influence on internal and external egg quality characteristics except Haugh unit. It was concluded that broiler offals or DCM could economically and successfully be used as alternate anal protein sources of fish meal without hampering the performance and gg qualitv characteristics of laying liens.

Objectives:

To evaluate performance, egg quality characteristics of laying hen and economic feasibility of using broiler offals and DCM as substitutes of fish meal.

Methodology:

Birds ami housing One hundred twenty randomly selected Shaver 579 hens of 40 weeks age were used in a feeding trial at Bangladesh Agricultural University. Mymensingh for a period of 16 weeks. All the birds were divided into three dietary treatment groups having four replications each and they were housed in individual cages. Prior to housing they were acclimatized in cages. Initial body weight of the hens was adjusted replicationwise in all treatment groups. Diets Birds of three treatment groups were provided with three different diets containing: i ) 7% fish meal (control), ii) 6% broiler offuls and iii) 3% DCM (a protein concentrate). Fresh broiler offais was collected from Birnan Poultry Complex, Suvar, Dhaka and was cleaned, washed and cut into small pieces. Pieces of offals were boiled for 10-15 minutes, then sun dried and mixed with the diets. All the feed ingredients including broiler offals were subjected to laboratory analysis for proximate components. Diets were formulated almost isocaloric and isonitrogenous using locally available feed ingredients. Birds were fed by satisfying the nutrient requirement of the birds as suggested in Shaver 579 Commercial Poultry Management Guide (Shaver Poultry Breeding Farms, Box 400, Cambridge, Ontagio, Canada NIR 5V9). All the birds were reared in a natural-ventilated poultry house and a 16h photoperiod was maintained throughout the experimental period. All mash dry feed and clean drinking water were supplied ad libitum. Waterers were cleaned and washed every morning and faecal material on floor was cleaned every week-end. Routine vaccination procedures and strict hygienic and sanitary measures were followed to combat infection. Eggs were collected twice a day at 9 a.m. and 3.30 p.m. Records were kept on fortnightly individual body weight, weekly feed consumption, daily egg production, egg weight and number of dead birds. Body weight change, feed conversion, hen-day egg production, egg mass output and survivability were calculated. Egg quality characteristics were measured and recorded at 8th and 16th week of the experimental period. Egg quality characters included egg shape index, yolk index, yolk colour score, yolk dry matter, yolk weight, Haugh Unit, albumen weight, albumen dry matter, albumen index, shell thickness, shell surface area, egg breaking strength, shell dry weight and membrane thickness and weight. The yolk colour index was measured by comparing egg yolk with the Roche Yolk Colour Fan manufactured by F. Hoffman La Roche Co. Ltd., Switzerland. After oven drying shell thickness (mm) was determined by means of an egg shell thickness meter from the pointed, middle and blunted parts of eggs. Average shell thickness was calculated and recorded. Data collected during experimental period were subjected to one-way analysis of variance according to a completely randomised design.

From the results of the present study, it was concluded that broiler offals and DCM could be a good fish meal substitutes for rearing layers.
