Correlation and Path Analysis of F2 Segregating Population of Chickpea

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Relationship between yield and yield contributing characters in F₂ population of chickpea were studied. Studies of correlation showed that seed yield/plant in chickpea was positively and significantly correlated with seeds/plant, 100-seed weight and plant height. Path coefficient analysis indicated that seeds/plant and plant height were important yield contributing characters. They had positive direct effects on the seed yield. These two characters may be suggested for selection index for seed yield in chickpea.

Objectives:

To obtain information on relationship as well as direct and indirect effects of six quantitative characters on seed yield of a F₂ segregating generation.

Methodology:

The F₂ generation of a cross between a small seeded mutant variety, Hyprosola and a large seeded exotic strain K-850 were used for this study. One hundred fifty one F₂ plants were grown in space planting. The experiment was conducted at Ishurdi during 1990-91. Observations were recorded on plant height (cm). days to maturity, 100-seed weight (g), single leaflet area (cm²), single leaf area (cm²), number of seeds/plant and seed yield/plant (g) on per plant basis. Leaflet area was measured by leaf area meter. Correlation coefficient between yield and yield contributing characters were calculated at genetic and phenotypic levels (Petr and Frey, 1966). The phenotypic correlations were only tested for their significant differences from zero. There is no method available for estimating standard errors of genetic correlation, therefore, the genetic correlations were not tested. Then path coefficient analysis was performed using genetic correlations only following the method of Dewey and Lu (1959).

Analyzing correlation and path coefficients, it is observed that seeds/plant and plant height were important characters influencing seed yield in chickpea. Therefore, in improvement of seed yield in chickpea, emphasis may be given on these two characters for selection index.
