Evaluation of Local Mango Lines Under High Rainfall Area of North-eastern Region of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out at the CRS, Jaintiapur, Sylhet with 21 local mango lines during August 2012 to July 2013. A wide variation was observed regarding plant growth, yield and yield contributing characters and fruit quality. The highest plant height was recorded in MI Jai-007 while maximum base girth was found in MI Jai-017. MI Jai-007 showed highest canopy size while MI Jai-021 was the lowest. Fruits of MI Jai-009 were harvested in late April which was considered as early fruiting, while MI Jai-040 was harvested in mid June. Maximum number of fruit (1343) and yield per plant (233.68 kg) were harvested from followed by MI Jai-005 and, MI Jai-007, while the lowest in MI Jai-034 (56 and 13.27 kg, respectively). The fruit weight ranged from 110.0 g (MI Jai-005) to 237.0 g (MI Jai-034). Maximum edible portion was recorded in MI Jai-017 (69.27%) followed by MI Jai-040 (65.65 %) and MI Jai-021 (64.29 %), whereas the lowest was recorded from MI Jai-018 (41.19%). Total soluble solid was observed maximum in MI Jai-020 (17.2%), followed by MI Jai-025 (16%), MI Jai-015 (15.6%) and MI Jai-038 (15.6%) while minimum TSS was noticed in MI Jai-002 (9.2%). Skin colour ranged from green to orang at ripan.

Objectives:

To study the performance of selected mango lines under high rainfall area of North-eastern hilly regions of Bangladesh
To released suitable mango varieties for this region.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Citrus Research Station, BARI, Jaintapur, Sylhet. The soil of Jaintapur is strongly acidic (pH 4.8) with low organic matter content and poor fertility level. Three BARI released mango varieties namely BARI Aam-1, BARI Aam-2 and BARI Aam-3, and 4 commercial varieties namely Langra, Gopalbhog, Mollika and Kamala sinduri were included in this study. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. A single tree of each variety constituted a replication. Fertilizer @ 30 kg cowdung, 1000 g urea, 500 g TSP, 350 g MoP, 350 g gypsum, 20 g zinc sulphate and 15 g borax were applied per plant in two splits in circular trench (60 cm broad, 30 cm deep) 1 m away from the trunk. First split was applied at the end of September and second at the end of April. Weeding was done twice manually following fertilizer application. Three full cover spray applications with Cymcare 10 EC @ 1 ml/L along with Bavistin 50WP @ 2 g/L were done; first at the flower initiation stage when the panicle is around two inches long; second at the pea stage of fruit and third spray at the marble stage of the fruit. These sprays prevented the fruit from attack of mango fruit weevil. Data on tree age, plant height (m), base girth (m), canopy spread (m), branching density, growth condition, time of flowering, time of harvesting, average fruit wt. (g), skin wt. (g), stone wt. (g), fruit length (cm), fruit breadth (cm), edible portion (%), TSS (%), number of fruits/plant, yield/plant (kg), skin colour, pulp colour and flesh texture were recorded and quantative data were analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering studied parameters especially yield and quality, MI Jai-005, MI Jai-006, MI Jai-007, MI Jai-013, MI Jai-015, MI Jai-020, MI Jai-025, MI Jai-027, MI Jai-038 and MI Jai-040 were found promising under high rainfall area of North-eastern hilly regions of Bangladesh. Among the promising mango germplasm more than one mango varieties may be developed for this region
