Genetic Variability and Correlation of Dry Leaf Yield and Some Biochemical Characters in Virginia Tobacco (nicotiana Tabacum L. )

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted with twenty cultivars of virginia tobacco to estimate the range of phenotypic variation, genetic parameters, simple and partial correlation for dry leaf yield, nicotine, protein and ash content of leaf. All these characters showed a wide range of phenotypic as well as genotypic variation, moderate to high degree of heritability and high genetic advance as percentage of mean. Significant negative association between leaf yield and ash content and significant positive correlation between nicotine and ash content were observed.

Objectives:

To collect information on genetic variability, heritability, genetic gain and correlation of dry leaf yield with nicotine, protein and ash content of virginia tobacco leaves.

Methodology:

The material comprising twenty cultivars of Virginia cigarette tobacco, (Nicotiana t abacum L). was grown at the Bangladesh Agricultural University farm, Mymensingh during the winter season of 1976. Randomized block design with four replications was followed in the experiment. The distances between row to row and plant to plant were 90 and 60 cru respectively. Each Teplication consisted of 20 rows, one row for each variety. Each row accommodated 20 plants of each cultivar. Non experimental materials around each replication were grown to reduce border effect. Normal cultural practices were used during the period of experiment . Observation was recorded from 15 plants selected at random from each variety of each replication. Mature leaves were harvested and -air dried. Weights in grams Were taken per plant basis. The air dried leaves Were oven dried a t 40°C for 12 hrs and finely ground. Nicotine content was determined from 0.5 g sample by the Colorimetric Method outlined by Shmuk (1936 J and modified by Borozdina and Shmuk and expressed in per cent. Protein content was estimated by Micro-Kjeldahl-nitrogen estimation method of Association of American -Cereal Chemists in per cent. Ash content was determined and the weight of variances of data mentioned above was expressed in per cent.Analysis was done and phenotypicgenotypic and error variances were estimated. Genotypic coefficient of variance wag determined according to Bur-ton ( 1951 ) and broad sense heritability on replication basis was stimatedy the formula used by Hanson et al, (1956). Expected genetic advance was estimated by the formula suggested hybrid ( 1960 ) and genetic advance in percentage of mean was calculated.Simple and partial correlations were computed.
