Effect of Date of Harvest on the Incidence of Potato Soft Rot Caused by Erwinia Carotovora Sub Sp. Caroto- Vora

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The susceptibility of five potato (Solanum tuberosum) cultivars namely, Diamont, Cardinal, Multa, Morene and Surjamukhi to soft rot caused by Erwinia carotovora sub splcarotovora was studied after harvesting at 70, 80, 90 and 100 days of maturity of tubers by moist paper towel method. The severity of soft rot decreased significantly for both wounded and unwounded tubers of all cultivars with the delay of time of harvest at 100 days maturity. In all the five cultivars soft rot was much higher in wounded than unwounded tubers, but less soft rot was observed in wounded and unwounded tubers of cv. Cardinal.

Objectives:

To determine the effect of different dates of harvest on the incidence of soft rot of potato caused by Erwinia cerotovore sub sp. carotovora.

Methodology:

Growing of potato: Seed tubers of five potato cultivars namely Diamont, Cardinal, Multa, Morene and Surjamukhi were inoculated with Erwinia carotovora sub sp. carotovora by dipping them in the suspension of a culture (Code No. IMI, B 1283) of the pathogen. Immediately after inoculation the tubers were planted in 4 replicated blocks. Data were analysed following a 5x4 (5 cultivars x 4 time of sampling) factorial design. Sampling of tubers: Sampling of tubers were collected beginning from 70 days of maturity of the crop with an interval of 10 days and continued for 4 consecutive time. Inducement and assessment of soft rot: Inducement and assessment of soft rot was done according to the method followed by Perombelon (1972). Individual subsample of 6 tubers replicated thrice was obtained from each sample collected every 10 days from each unit plot under each cultivar. For determination of amount of soft rot tissues the tubers samples were individually wrapped in moist paper toweling and each sample was sealed in a small polythene bag. The replicated sample both for wounded and unwounded per cultivar were placed in a larger polythene bag and sealed properly to made it airtight. For wounded tuber treatment, ten lenticels per tuber were damaged by toothpick to a depth of 10 mm at random. These were incubated for 4-5 days at room temperature. At the end of incubation period the tubers were washed under running tap water to remove the soft rotted tissues. The loss of tissues due to soft rot was determined by subtracting the weight of tubers recorded before incubation. Data were expressed in percentage (w/w).

Achievement/Findings:

In the results, it appears that the skin and tissue of tubers confer some resistance to soft rot pathogen due to formation of a resitin and phytotuber in the infected tissues (Lyen et al. 1975). The farmers should cultivate less susceptible cultivars and also care should be taken to harvest more mature tubers without injury to prevent soft rot.
