Effect of Degree of Land Preparation and Spacing on Weed Growth and Yield of Transplant Aman Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from August 1988 to December 1988 to determine the effect of degree of land preparation and different plant spacings on weed growth and yield of transplant aman rice (cv. BR11). The experimental results revealed that the highest weed growth was recorded in no land preparation condition and the lowest weed growth was recorted in maximum number of ploughings (land preparations with four ploughing followed by four laddering). Decrease in crop spacing progressively reduced the production of weed dry matter . The highest grain yield was obtained in two ploughing followed by two laddering at a spacing of 25 cm x 12.5 cm. Among the weed vegetation, grasses predominated over the sedges and broadleaf weeds and perennials outnumbered the annuals. Cynodon dactylon and Paspalum distichum were the two dominating weed species in transplant aman rice.

Objectives:

To find the effect of degree of ploughing and plant spacing on the weed growth and yield of transplant aman rice.

Methodology:

In a split plot design four degrees of land preparation namely, (i) No land preparation weeds were out at the base before transplanting, (ii) One ploughing followed by one laddering, (iii) Two ploughing followed by two laddering and (iv) Four ploughing followed by four laddering, were assigned in the main plots and three plant spacing namely, (i) 15cm x 7.5cm, (ii) 25cm x 12.5cm and (iii) 30cm x 15cm were placed in the sub- plots and replicated four times in 4m x 5m plots. Fertilizers were applied at the rate of 60-40-40- 20-10 kg/ha of N, P205 , K₂0, S and Zn as urea, triple superphosphate (TSP). muriate of potash (MP), gypsum and zinc sulphate, respectively. The full amount of TSP, Mp, Gypsum and sine sulphate were applied just before planting. Urea were top dressed at 15 , 25 and 45 days after transplanting (DAT) at three equal splits. Rice seedlings of variety BR 1 1 at the age of 29 days were transplanted on 20 August 1988 at different spacings as per treatments . The experimental plots were irrigated as and when necessary to make constant supply of standing water. The crop was harvested on 24 December 1988, when it was fully matured. Weed species were counted species- wise and collected at 20 DAT, 40 DAT, and at harvest by using a one meter square quadrat. Three samples were taken from each plot and their mean values were used to report the results. Grain yield per unit area was recorded after harvesting at 14% moisture level. The data so collected on weeds and crop yields were analyzed statistically and the differences between the means were adjudge d as per LSD test.
