Purification and Regeneration of Shahi Pepe

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Shahi is an excelant gynocious papa variety developed by BARI. Due to its gynoshiem its originality was detoriorate. For rgeneration of originality, an experiment was carried out at the Fruit Research Farm of Horticulture Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur during January 2007 to October 2013. Seedlings of purified selfed seeds were transplanted in the main field and five flowers were selfed (Sib mating) in each plant and harvesting was done and seeds were sown in next season. During 2013 a total 500 flowers were selfed, among those 450 fruits exhibited the original characteristics of shahi pepe. It revealed that 88 % fruit contained Shahi characters. During the study period from 2007 to 2013 fruit weight ranged from 1.05 to 1.43 kg with an average of 1.24 kg which is much higher than that of original shahi pepe (0.95kg). Fruit length and breadth varied 26.71 and 11.31 cm (2007) to 20.11 and 13.24 cm (2013), respectively. Pulp colou ranged from red colour (2007) to deep red colour (2013) and TSS varied from 10.78 (2007) to 12.50 % (2013).

Objectives:

To purify the variety through selfing (sib mating) and selection.
Regeneration of Shahi pepe having original fruit characters viz. flesh colour, TSS, fruit size and fruit quality.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Fruit Research Farm of Horticulture Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur during January 2013 to October 2013. Selfed seeds of purified shahi pepe were collected from identified deep red fruits which were shahi shaped. The seeds were sown on January 2013 in 15 x 10 cm polythene bag filled with the mixture of 1:1 soil and well decomposed cowdung. Two months old seedlings were transplanted in the field on March 2013 at 2 x 2 m spacing. Cowdung, TSP, gypsum, zinc sulphate and boric acid were applied at the rate of 20 Kg, 500 g, 500 g, 20 g and 30 g per pit, respectively before 15 days of transplanting. Three seedlings were planted in each pit in triangular form and staked with bamboo stick. The seedlings were irrigated everyday for one week just after planting. Top dressing was done 5 times, first top dressing with 50 g urea and 50 g MP were applied after one month of transplanting and then after flowering, each plant was fertilized with 100 g urea and 100 g MoP per plant at an interval of one month. Weeding and irrigation were done followed by top dressing and Ridomil Gold @ 2g/liter water was sprayed 8 times from 15 days after transplanting. Female and male plants were maintained at 10:1 ratio, after flowering only one plant per pit was maintained and others were eradicated. From fruit initiation to last harvest each plant was supported by bamboo. For purification of shahi pepe to its original characters, five flowers were selected for sib mating in each plant and sib mating was done in the month of June 2013. A total of 500 flowers were selfed during 05 June 2013 to 28 June 2013 for the study. Harvesting was done from Mid September to last week of October 2013. After harvesting, the fruits developed through sib mating of flowers were analyzed in the laboratory and compared with the original shahi pepe based on fruit shape, fruit size, pulp thickness, pulp colour and TSS.

Achievement/Findings:

From the result of 2013, it is clear that the experiment result is very close to original Shahi pepe.

About 88% originality was regained, and it may be expected that the characters of pure Shahi pepe will be regained very soon.
