Hybridization in Guava

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was initiated at HRC, BARI, Gazipur during 2010-2011 on varietal improvement of guava through hybridization. Hybridization was done between BARI released - BARI Payara-2, exotic - PG Ex 001, PG Ex 002, PG Ex 003, local PG 003 and PG 005 guava lines. Only two fruits (PG Ex 002 x BARI Payara-2 and PG 003 x BARI Payara-2) were harvested after successful crosses. Seedlings raised and planted for evaluation. Only few fruits were harvested from first season’s bearing and showed very promising variations. First season bearing is still continuing.

Out of ten cross combinations, two fruits were successfully obtained from the cross PG Ex 002 x BARI Payara-2 and PG 003 x BARI Payara-2. Seeds were extracted from the fruits and seedlings were raised in polybags. Forty six seedlings from the cross PG Ex 002 x BARI Payara-2 and twenty five seedlings from the cross PG 003 x BARI Payara-2 were planted with closer spacing (2m x 3m) in the field during October 2013 for evaluation. To establish and maintain this orchard standard cultural practice as well plant protection measures were followed as and when necessary. The planted seedlings were started to set fruits from April 2014. Flower and fruit thinning were done to allow the F₁plants to express maximum fruit quality. Only few fruits were harvested during the end of July 2014. Data in respect of number of fruits per plant and quantitative and qualitative characteristics of fruits were recorded during April to July 2011.

Achievement/Findings:
