Effect of Rootstocks on Growth, Disease Incidence and Yield of Guava Varieties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment to investigate the effect of rootstocks on growth, disease incidence and yield of guava varieties was conducted at the Fruit Research Farm, Horticulture Research Center, BARI, Gazipur during 2013-2014 with a view to find out the survivability and field performances of grafted and non-grafted guava plants. There were ten treatment combinations, namely Kazi peyara grafted on L-49, BARI Peyara-2 grafted on L-49, Kazi peyara grafted on Poly peyara, BARI Peyara-2 grafted on poly peyara, BARI Peyara-2 grafted on Strawberry guava, Kazi peyara grafted on Strawberry guava, goottee of BARI Peyara-2, goottee of Kazi Peyara and seedling of BARI Peyara-2.. Seedling of BARI Peyara-2 use as check. Plants were planted in the field in May 2013. Maximum plant height (2.45 m), base girth (14.00 cm), canopy spread and number of primary branches (2.75) were recorded in check. The highest success (93 % at 30 DAG) and survivability (83.00 % at 90 DAG) were recorded from BARI Peyara-2 when grafted on L-49 rootstock. All grafts of Kazi peyara grafted on strawberry guava died after eight months after grafting operations.The highest number of flowers (250.00) and fruits (26.00) per plant was found in BARI Peyara-2 grafted on L-49 rootstock. Growth condition of all the plants varied from poor to excellent. Kazi Peyara grafted on L-49, BARI Peyara-2 grafted on L-49 and seedling of BARI Peyara-2 showed excellent growth, Kazi Peyara and BARI Peyara-2 when grafted on Poly Peyara exhibited intermediate growth, BARI Peyara-2 grafted on strawberry guava showed poor performances in the field.

Objectives:

To find out the survivability and field performances of grafted and non-grafted guava plants.
To developed sustainability technology against guava wilting.

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted at the Fruit Research Farm of HRC, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur in February, 2012 using cleft method of grafting. The experiment consisted of two scion varieties viz., Kazi Peyara and BARI Peyara-2 and three rootstock varieties viz., Poly Peyara, Strawberry guava and L-49. The two factor experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications to find out the success, survivability and field performances of guava plants. One year old five among six grafting along with other gootte of BARI Peyara-2 and Kazi Peyara, and seedling plants of BARI Peyara-2 (check) were planted in field on 12 May 2013. Therefor there were (2×3) 6+2+1=10 treatment combinations in the present study, namely Kazi Peyara grafted on L-49, BARI Peyara-2 grafted on L-49, Kazi Peyara grafted on Poly peyara, BARI Peyara-2 grafted on Poly peyara, BARI Peyara-2 grafted on Strawberry guava, Kazi Peyara grafted on Strawberry guava, goottee of BARI Peyara-2, goottee of Kazi peyara and seedling of BARI Peyara-2. The experimental design was RCBD with four replications. Single plant constituted a unit plot. The plants were fertilized with the recommended doses of manure and fertilizer (cowdung-15 kg, urea 150-200 g, TSP 150-200 g and MP 150-200 g). Fertilizers were applied in six installments at two months interval. Intercultural operations such as weeding, ploughing, spading, irrigation and plant protection measures were done as and when required. Data on different growth parameters, flower and fruit thinning and, fruit retention were recorded and analyzed statistically. Base girth of the tree was measured at a height of 15 cm above the ground level.

Achievement/Findings:

The rootstock L-49 grafted on to BARI Peyara-2 exhibited superior performance in terms of grafting success, survivability percent, growth as well as number flowers and fruits. From this study in was concluded that L-49 is a potential root stock of guava against wilting and might be recommended for guava propagation
