Intercropping of Upland Rice with Mungbean at Different Planting Geometry

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment on upland rice-mungbean intercropping was conducted to assess the agro-economic advantages of intercropping in terms of grain, biomass and crude protein yields over rice monoculture. Rice yield was significantly reduced by intercropping with mungbean. A similar reduction in grain yield of mungbean occurred due to intcrcropping, However, land equivalent ratio (LER) and competitive ratio (CR) values indicated a beneficial effect of intercropping and thus the crops were considered mutually adaptable.The crude protein yield was the highest with mungbean monoculture. Intercropping incrcascd the crude protein yield of rice.

Objectives:

To assess the agro-economic advantages of intercrop systems rice monoculture

Methodology:

A field experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of BRRI, Gazipur in the Aus season of 1989. The crop cultivar used was BR21 and a promising mungbean line developed by BARI, designated as 7715. The treatments consisted of sole crops of rice and mungbean and intercrops of ricc-mungbean at 4:1 and 2:1 row ratios. The experiment was laid out in a randomizedd complete block design with four replications. Fertilizers were applied at the rates of 20, 40, 40 kg/ha N, P₂0₅ and K₂0, respectively at the time of final land preparation. Two more doses of 20 kg N kg/ha each were applied as top dressings at 30 and 45 days after seeding (DAS). Seeds were hand drilled in lines on 24 May, 1989 at the rates of 80 and 25 kg/ha for rice and mungbean, respectively, as sole crops. The row to row distance for rice was 20 cm and the same for mungbean seeds were drilled After every four and two rows of rice in 4:1 and 2:1 planting patterns, respectively. Seed rate used for intercropping was based on optimum planting density for each crop. Seed needed for each row was calculated and seeded on the furrows. The first weeding was done at 15 DAS and two subsequent weedings were done on the days of N top dressing. Appropriate plant protection measures were taken. Mature pods of mungbean were harvested three times, viz; 60, 75, 85 DAS from 8 sq. m sample areas of both the monoculture and intcrcrop plots. The pods were threshed, cleaned and grain weight recorded. Grain yield (at 12% moisture content) was computed and expressed in kg/ha. Grain yield of rice was calculated at 14%. moisture content and expressed in kg/ha. The crop residues (straw) were harvested at the ground level and dry matter weights recorded. The crude protein contents of the crop residues were determined. The land equivalent ratio (LER) and the competitive ratio (CR) were calculated.
