Environmental Effect on the Grain Characteristics of Selected Rice Varieties in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted to determine the seasonal effect on the physical grain characters of five varieties of rice. The characters varied significantly both among the varieties and seasons except milling outturn in Boro season. Significant variations were observed for varieties, seasons and variety x season. The results indicated that seasonal variation for temperature, humidity, rainfall, solar radiation etc. should be considered in selecting grain quality of rice.

Objectives:

To determine the seasonal effect on the physical grain characteristics of the selected modern rice varieties of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of the Bangladesh Rice Research Instutute (BRRI), Cazipur in Boro (S₁)' Transplanted Aus (S₂) and Transplanted Aman (S₃) seasons in 1985. Five modern rice varieties namely, BRl, BR3, BR9, BRI2 and BRI6 were used in the study. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with five replications. The individual plot consisted of four rows 5.4 m long with rows and hills 25 cm and 15 cm apart respectively. The fertilizer dozes were N 60 kg, P 40 kg K 40 kg, Zn 10 kg and S 100 kg/ha One-third of N and all other fertilizers were applied as a basal dozes. The remaining doses of nitrogen were used for the top dressings, one during active tillering stage and the other one week before panicle initiation. Recommended cultural practices were followed and plant protection measures were taken as and when needed. After threshing, drying and cleaning, grains were kept in gunny bags for six weeks at room temperature to equalize the moisture content of different samples in each season. The characters studied were 1000-grain weight (g), grain length (mm), grain length/breadth (L/B) ratio, brown rice outturn (%) and milling outturn (%). The data were used for analysis of variance, coefficients of variation and pooled analysis of variance using standard statistical procedures.
