Field Observation on the Attack of Stem Fly on Differet Cultivars of Soybean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Stem fly. Melanagromyza sp. has been emerging as a major pest of soybean ( Glycine m1X L.) at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Ishurdi, Pabna during the past few years. In some cases, it has been causing very serious problem in soybean cultivation in this station. A 4-5 mm long greenish white to creamy white maggot enters in the stem of young soybean plant through a minute hole made by them just above the soil surface and travels in both directions making tunnel through the pith up to the terminal ends of stem. Consequently, the apical growth of the affected plants ceases and the plants can be easily identified by an abruptly swelling tip with a cluster of of leaves. In some ceases, the infested -plants suffer from complete drying.

Objectives:

To study the biology and control measures of the pest.

Methodology:

The present study was undertaken at the Regional Agril. Research Station ( BARI), Ishurdi, Pabna during the three consecutive seasons of Rabi and Kharif (1978-80) with six recommended cultivars of soybean. The percentage of infestation was calculated by counting total number of healthy and infested plants of each plot and replications .Finally the average of the data were calculated.

Achievement/Findings:

From the observations of the three consecutive seasons it revealed that the cultivar Forrest showed highest (25.57) percentage of infestation which followed-by Davis ( 21.94). Clarck-SI ( 21.09). Williams (20.96), Lee-74- (15.48) and the lowest by Bragg (10.30). Almost in all cases, the kharif crops showed higher infestation than Ra bi crops and on an average the percentage of infestation recorded 19.24.
