Effects of Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Sulphur on Aus Rice and Their Residual Effect on Aman Rice in a Tidal Flooded Soil of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An investigation was carried out in a tidal flooded soil of Bangladesh during 1990 with a view to examine the effect of N, P and S application on growth and yield of aus rice and residual effect of P and S application on growth and yield of aus rice and residual effect of P and S on aman rice. The results showed that grain yield of rice responded significantly to N and S application. The application of P with N or NS brought higher grain yield but such effect was not statistically significant. The highest grain yield was obtained with 60 kg N+ 30 kg P + 20 kg S/ha application, showing a 27% yield increase over 60 kg N/ha application alone. Results from aman rice showed that S had significant residual effect on grain yield. The overall findings indicated that fertilizer application to each crop needs careful consideration for obtaining maximum output with minimum input.

Objectives:

To evaluate the effects of N, P and S on transplanted aus rice and the residual effects of P and S with renewed application of N fertilizers on following aman rice in a tidal flooded soil of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experiments were carried out at Patuakhali Agricultural College, Dhumki during the cropping season of 1990. The soil was clay loam in texture having pH 6.1, total N 0.1 %, organic matter 2.1%. Olsen's P 13 ppm, exchangeable K, Ca, Mg and Na were 0.42, 8.8 1, 3.72 and 0.23 meq/100g, respectively, CaCl₂ extractable S 11.0 ppm, and 0.1 M HCI extractable Zn 3.0 ppm. The fertilizer trial was carried out to see its effect on transplanted aus rice and residual effect on aman rice. Tidal water adapted local cultivar "Haloi" was selected for aus season. The tidal water submerged the experimental area from the beginning of summer season. The land preparation and transplantation were performed at that condition. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with four replications. There were eight treatment combinations as : control, N₂ , N₂ , N₂P, N₂ P₂ , N₂S, N₇ P₂ P and N₂P₂S, where N₁ represents 30 kg N/ha; N₂ represents 60 kg N/ha; P₁ represents 30 kg P/ha; P₂ represents 60 kg P/ha, and S represents 20 kg S/ha. Urea was applied for nitrogen, TSP for phosphorus, MP for potassium and gypsum for sulphur. A basal dose of 25 kg K/ha was applied to all plots. The full dose of TSP, MP and gypsum was applied at the time of final land preparation. Nitrogen was added in three equal splits, the first dose during final land preparation and remaining at 30 and 55 days after transplantation. Thirty days old seedlings were transplanted in the field by maintaining spacing of 20 cm x 15 cm. lntercultural operations, such as weeding and pest control, were done as and when necessary. After harvest of the aus rice, all the unit plots were brought under aman rice cultivation. The crop variety used was "Lalomta". Urea-N was applied according to the treatments. Phosphate or sulfur fertilizers was not applied at this time. Yield components were recorded on ten plants from each plot prior to harvest and plot wise yields were recorded after harvest . Statistical analysis on plant characters were done and their means were adjudged by Duncan's New Multiple Range Test .

Results from aman rice showed that S had significant residual effect on grain yield. The overall findings indicated that fertilizer application to each crop needs careful consideration for obtaining maximum output with minimum input.In both aus and aman rice there was significant beneficial effect of applied nitrogenous fertilizer on yield and yield contributing characters of rice which is expected due to low level of total N content (0.1% total N) in soil.
