Efficiency of Different Forms and Application Methods of N Fertilizer on Rainfed Lowland Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Deep placement of urea super granules (USG) by hand and machine, and prilled urea (PU) by 2 to 3 split applications in rainfed rice were compared during 1986 and 1987. USG performed better than PU in all the parameters tested. The highest grain yield was obtained from hand placed use which was identical with machine placed use and three split application of PU. The highest agronomic use efficiency of nitrogen and nitrogen recovery percentage was obtained with the hand placed use followed by machine placed use and the three split application of PU.

Objectives:

To determine the efficacy of different forms of nitrogen and its application methods on rainfed transplanted aman rice in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The field experiments were conducted at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute , Joydebpur, during 1986 and 1987 in rainfed condition. Urea super granules and PU were applied as nitrogen sources. urea super granules were applied by two methods i) deep plunger machine placement and ii) hand placement. In both the methods use were placed 8-10 cm deep from soil surface at 15 days after transplanting (DAT). Two USG balls were placed at the center of every 4 hills. Prilled urea was broadcasted i) two splits (2/3 at basal and 1/3 at 5 days before panicle initiation (DBPI) and ii) three splits 1/3 at 15 DAT, 1/3 at maximum tillering (MT) and 1/3 at 5 DBPI. The experiments were laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The variety was BR11. Three to four seedlings/hill were transplanted at 20x20cm spacing. The unit plot size was 4x4m. Fertilizers were applied @ 58-40-40-4 kg/ha of N-P₂O₅- K₂O-S-Zn ,respectively. All fertilizers except N was applied as basal. Nitrogen was applied as per treatment. The plots were kept weed free by hand weeding. Plant height of randomly selected 10 hills/plot was recorded. Twenty hills/plot were selected randomly and panicle numbers were counted. Two to three hills with average number of panicles were taken to record the data on yield components. The crop from 5m² area in the middle of each plot was harvested for grain and straw yield. Grain yields were adjusted at 14% moisture level. The straw yields were recorded after proper sun drying. Agronomic efficiency was calculated by unit kg rice produced per unit kg nitrogen applied. Nitrogen uptake from both grain and straw were calculated and nitrogen recovery (absorbed unit kg nitrogen per unit kg nitrogen applied) was calculated in percentage. The collected data were analyzed following the standard statistical procedures.
