The effects of green manuring with cowpea and sunnhemp on irrigated rice was studied on a heavy clay soil in the BRRI research farm during 1985 Boro season. The aim of the trial was to examine the effects of green manuring in association with applied fertilizer nitrogen on the growth and yield of rice cultivar BR14. Both cowpea and sunnhemp alone and with applied nitrogen increased tiller number and yield. Cowpea with 80 kg N/ha produced grain yield of 4.8 t/ha and was very similar to that obtained by 120 kg N/ha alone. Green manuring with sunnhcmp appeared to be superior to cowpea. Sunnhemp with 40 kg N/ha produced the highest grain yield (5.3 t/ha). Applied nitrogen beyond 40 kg/ha in association with sunnhemp did not increase yield. It was concluded that a good crop of green manure could provide about 50% of the total nitrogen requirement of a rice crop on a similar soil type.

To investigate the effects of cowpea and sunnhemp green manuring in combination with N fertilizer on the growth and yield of rice.

The experiment was conducted at the BRRI farm during 1985 Boro season. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with green manures (cowpea, sunnhcmp) and fallow in the main plot and N rates (0, 40, 80 and 120 kg/ha) in the sub-plot. The treatments were replicated three times. After general land preparation, cowpea and sunnhemp seeds were sown on 29 November, 1984 at 35 and 20 kg/ha, respectively, in plots of 17- x 5- m area. A buffer plot of one metre width was kept in between two green manure treatments to avoid transmission of organic matters. Two sprinkler irrigations were applied, one at the time of sowing and the other at 20 days after emergenc (DAE). Metasys tox-R 25 EC was applied in the cowpea plots at 30 and 45 DAE to control thrips and flea beetles. About 60 DAE, the green manures were ploughed down by power tiller and the fallow plots were also opened on the same day. Sunnhemp crop was chopped into pieces for easy mixing with soil and quick decomposition. Before ploughing down total biomass (dry matter) production of the green manures was estimated and a portion of dry mater was analyzed for N content. The biomss production of cowpea and sunnhemp were 859 and 3,246 kg/ha and the corresponding N accumulations were 30 and 91 kg/ha respectively. Unfortunately, weed biomass yield in the fallow plot was not measured. Land was finally prepared by two spading followed by laddering. A common dose of 60-40-30 kg/ha P205,K20 and S respectively, were applied at final land preparation. Nitrogen treatments were applied in three equal splits namely; basal, at active tillering stage (ATS) and at about panicle initiation (PI). Forty-five-day-old seedlings of Gazi (BR14) were transplanted on 14 February, 1985 at 20 cm x 20 cm spacing, putting 2-3 seedlings/hill. The land was kept weed free up to 50 days from transplanting. Irrigation was applied as soon as standing water was drained out. During the vegetative and flowering stages, there was severe outbreak of rice hispa (Hispa armigera) which was successfully controlled by three sprays with Diazinon 60 EC, Curacron 50 EC and Dimccron 100 WSC. At full maturity, the crop was harvested on 28 May, 1985. Data on tiller number, yield components, etc were collected . Grain yields with 14% moisture content were calculated from samples area of 6 m2 taken from the middle of each plot. The above ground straw dry matter production was estimated from one m2 sample area after removing the grains and sundrying.
