Development of Simple Rainfall Simulator

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A physical model study was done to develop a simple rainfall simulator and it was - calibrated to determine different characteristics of rainfall at different intensities under calm wind condition •. The simple rainfall simulator. consisting of a steel frame, a plastic net and spray nozzles at a height of 2.5 meter above the ground was used to determine drop size, kinetic energy and momentum of raindrop, drop size distribution, fall velocities of raindrops, This simulator was calibrated to vary the rainfall intensities ranging from 21.34 to 105.16 mm/hr and finally relationships among rainfall intensities, drop diameters, rainfall distribution, drop size distribution were established0.

Objectives:

To develop a simple rainfall simulator

Methodology:

The rainfall simulator was designed to fulfil the following characteristics: i) The simulated rainfall should produce similar drop diameters, drop size distribution, fall velocities a's those of natural rainfall. ii) The simulator should be simple and can be carried easily from one place to another. In order to get uniform distribution of rainfall and designed size of raindrop, a plastic net was used. The reason behind the use of the net was that all the raindrops would start falling from the same height at zero velocity. In other words, it was desired to allow free fall to the drops.To get a suitable sprinkler nozzle,various nozzles were " investigated to check their abilities in satisfying desired characteristics. Among all the nozzles tested, Static Garden Sprinkler was the suitable one to fulfil the characteristics of the simulator. The followings were the characteristics of the nozzle:i) Nozzle- Static Garden Sprinkler.ii) Height- 2.65 meters above the soil surface, but the height of the net upon which water was sprayed by nozzles,

Achievement/Findings:

This simulator was also used to determine the kinetic energy of rainfall and it was found that the kinetic energy of simulated rainfall was about 53% of' that of natural rainfall. The reason behind this was that the fall velocities of simulated raindrops were about 75%of those of natural rainfall.
