Yield and Germination Ability of Radish Seeds as Influenced by Root and Shoot Cuts

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted to see the effect of root and shoot cuttings on the yield and quality of radish seed cv. Tasaki Sun. Root cutting delayed flowering time and maturation of pods, and reduced the yield and quality of seeds, Shoot cutting did not have much influence on the yield and quality of seeds. Under the experimental conditions. transplanting of stecklings with no root cut and 2/3rd shoot cut appeared the best for seed production.

Objectives:

To investigate the effects of different levels of root and shoot cuts on the yield and germination ability of radish seeds cv. Tasaki Sun.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the Citrus and Vegetable Seed Research Centre Farm of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur. The soil of the experimental plot was sandy loam in texture with ,pH 6.2 The variety of radish selected for the experiment was Tasakl Sun. The treatment consisted of five levels each of root and shoot cuts. The experiment was laid out in the randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 6.0m x 1.2m. Seeds were sown on 19 November 1984 in the two row bed system. Three seeds were sown in each hill maintaining a 60cm space between the rows and 30cm between the hills. The seedlings were thinned leaving onIy one seedling per hill. The crop received 10 tons of cowdung, ~75 kg urea, 225 kg triple superphosphate and 225 kg muriate of potash per hectare. The total quantity of cowdung .and triple superphosphate and one- third of urea and muriate of potash were applied to the soil during final preparation of land. The remaining quantity of urea and muriate of potash were top dressed in two equal instalments after 3 and 5 weeks of sowing of seeds. The stecklings were uprooted after 45 days of sowing and were given different levels of root and shoot cuts as per the treatments. Bordeaux mixture paste was applied on the cut surface of radish roots. The treated steckllngs were then transplanted in the unit plots maintaining a 60cm space between the rows and plants. The crop was irrigated as and when needed. Maturation of the seed crop varied with treatments. Harvesting of seed commenced on 18 March and continued up to 3 April 1985. Ten plants. were selected at random from each plot for yield parameter study.

Achievement/Findings:

The results of the present experiment suggest that transplanting of radish stecklings cv. Tasaki Sun with intact root and 2/3rd shoot cut is better for the production of seeds. Seed production ability of this variety without uprooting the plants (in situ method) was, however, not considered in this experiment which remains to be assessed. The possible damage of trans- planted radish stecklings with root cuts, due to the attack of rot causing organisms, also needs to be thoroughly studied.
