Fecundity of the Gangetic Anchovy, Setipinna Phasa (hamilton - Buchanan) from the Bay of Bengal

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Fecundity of Setipinna phasa (Hamilton-Buchanan) was estimated for 13 berried females from the Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh. The fecundity ranged from 3,957 to 41,413 (av. 19, 858 ± 10793) in fishes between 16.2 and 30 cm in total length. The coefficient of correlation for F /TL (F = - 42766.150 + 2554.496 TL; log F= -1.247 + 3.939 log TL), F /SL (F= - 44242.325+3018.139 SL; log F = -1.127 + 4.041 log SL), F /BW (F= - 4249.974+282.439 BW; log F = 1.857+ 1.252 log BW), and F/GW (F = - 397.686 + 2619.996 G W; log F = 3.376 + 1.039 log GW) were obtained as 0.923 and 0.975, 0.923 and 0.974, 0.947 and 0.967, and 0.977 and 0.990 for arithmetic and logarithmic scales, respectively. Highly significant (p < 0.01) linear relationships for both arithmetic and logarithmic scales were obtained for all variables but gonad weight was found to be the best indicator of the fecundity of S. phasa.

Objectives:

To estimate the number of ova of individual females, and to establish the relationships of the fecundity (F) with the total length (TL), standard length (SL), body weight (BW) and gonad weight (GW).

Methodology:

Berried S. phasa (total length 16.2 to 30 cm, weight 24.2 to 154.6 g) were collected between December 1992 and November 1993 from fish landing centres at Loitraghat, Firingibazar and Patenga of Chittagong, Bangladesh. Mature females were sorted out on the basis of slightly swollen abdomen of the fish. After transportation to the laboratory the samples were washed thoroughly with water and excess water was dried with blotting paper. Length and weight were measured to the nearest 0.1 cm and 0.01 g, respectively. The intact ovary of each fish was dissected out. After blotting the excess fluid each ovary was weighed to the nearest 0.001 g with a pan balance and then preserved in 5% formalin for further study. Six cross sectional samples of 0.5 g were taken along with the accompanying membranes from the anterior, middle and posterior regions of the two lobes of each ovary. The eggs in each sample of the six sections were counted. The total number of eggs was then calculated. The relationship between fecundity, total length, standard length, body weight and gonad weight was determined by the least square method and calculated arithmetically and logarithmically.

Achievement/Findings:

The present study indicates that S. phasa found in the Bay of Bengal is more fecund than that of Indian waters. Though total length, standard length, body weight and gonad weight are found significantly correlated with the fecundity, however, gonad weight is the best indicator of fecundity of S. phasa.
