Effect of Salinity on Germination, Growth, Yield and Mineral Composition of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of salinity on germination. growth, yield and mineral composition of rice. Although salinity delayed seed germination initially, satisfactory germination was observed finally up to 8 dS/m, beyond which germination was significantly reduced. Rice at ECe of 6 dS/ m gave normal straw yield but produced significantly lower grain yield in comparison to control. Salinity delayed crop maturity by over one week. There was no significant differences in plant height, number of effective tillers under different salinity levels. The grain yield per panicle and 1000 grain weight were significantly reduced as the salinity increased from 4 to 6 dS/m. Sodium accumulation in rice straw increased and K/Na ratio decreased with an increase in soil salinity. The concentration of Na was higher at maturity than at tillering or at flowering stage. But the percent increase in Na was significantly higher at flowering than at tillering or at maturity stage. Salinity increased the N content in rice plant but there were no variations in P content of different plant parts.

Objectives:

To evaluate the effect of salinity on germination, growth, yield and mineral composition of rice.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was conducted during Aman season in 1991 at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute. Bulk soil sample (0-20 cm) was collected from coastal saline area of Sonapur, Feni. The soil was air dried, crushed and passed through a 5 mm sieve. The soil was silt loam with pH 7 .5, organic matter 1.4%, total N 0.07, available Olsen p 8. 5 ppm,, 0.29, 6 .60 and 6.64 meq/ 100 g exchangeable cations of Na, K, Ca and Mg, respectively. Soil pH (1 :1 soil:water) was determined by using the Beckman pH meter; ECe was measured by Beckman conductivity bridge; organic carbon; total nitrogen by microkjeldahl; available P was determined colorimetrically using molybdo-blue colour; exchangeable Na, K, Ca and Mg by neutral ammonium acetate saturation; available Zn and soil texture following hydrometer method. Ten kilogram soil was used in each polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pot (24cm x 22cm). Five soil salinity levels of ECe 2 (control) ,4 , 6, 8 and 10 dS/m, prepared by using crude salt (collected from salt flat in Chittagong), were tested on the modern rice variety, BR 10 (Progoti). The experimental design was a randomized complete block with 3 replications. Germination of seed was observed under different levels (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16) of saline water.
