Response of Soybean (glycine Max L.) to Phosphorus and Sulphur Fertilization

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Effects of phosphorus and sulphur were tested on inoculated soybean during rabi season at the control Farm of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute. Results indicated significant favorable effect of P and S on nodulation, yield and yield attributes of soybean. Dry matter production was found to be the highest w ith the application of P and S. The highest seed yield of 1.93 t/ha was produced by 60 kg P and 40 kg S/ha with blanket dose of 50 kg K₂O and 5 kg Zn/ha. However, the treatment combination P ₆₀S₂₀ kg/ha along with 50 kg K 20 and 5 kg Zn/ ha was more profitable than other treatments based on benefit-cost ratio (4.84).

Objectives:

To asses the effect of different rates of P and S fertilizers on the yield and yield attributes of inoculated soybean .

Methodology:

The texture of the soil is silty clay loam belonging to the Chhiata series of Grey Terrace Soils. Total amount of rainfall was 510.8 mm during the crop growth period. Soil samples were collected from a depth of 0-20 cm before sowing. The treatments consisted of four levels of phosphorus (0, 30, 60 and 90 kg P₂0₅/ ha) and three levels of sulphur (0, 20, and 40 kg S/ ha) . The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design and each treatment was replicated three times. The unit plot size was 5 m x 3 m. Phosphorus and Sulphur were applied in the form of triple superphosphate and gypsum as basal. A blanket dose of 50 kg K 20/ ha as muriate of potash and 5 kg Zn/ha as zinc oxide were applied to the plots during f inal land preparation. The seeds of soybean (Var . Shohag) we re coated with the Rhizobium inoculant immediately before sowing using gum arabic as the sticking agent. The seeds were sown on 21 January, 1994 maintaining row to row and plant to plant spacings of 30 cm and 10 cm, respectively. Thinning, weeding, mulching and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Ten selected plants were uprooted to study nodule number, dry weight of nodule and dry matter at 50% flowering. Data on yield attributes were recorded from ten plants selected randomly from each plot. The crop was harvested (2 m x 4 m area) at full maturity on 17 May, 1994. The collected data were then analyzed statistically and the means were compared by Least significant difference (LSD) .
