Effect of Different Types of Feeding on Castor and Cassava Leaves for Rearing of Eri-silkworm, Samia Cynthia Ricini (boisd)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present experiment was carried out to lee the effect of different types of feeding on castor and cassava leaves for the growth, development and yield of eri- sllkworm, Semis cynthia ricini (Bolsduvalj, The results revealed that larvae of all instars reared on castor leaves showed significantly higher growth, development of larvae and pupae and cocoon recovery Including shorter larval and pupaI period and adult longevity than six other treatments included in the study. These enhanced growth rate, development and yield of Cocoons were observed only in case of female eri-sllkworm. It was further revealed that only castor were suitable for batter rearing of eri-silkworrn.

Objectives:

To study the effect of different types of feeding of castor and cassava leaves on the larval and pupal growth and yield of cocoon in eri-silkworm.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Sericulture Research Laboratory. Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from April to June 1989 at temperature 26±3⁰C and RH 75, 2:11%. There were seven treatments, each having three replications and with 50 larvae per replication. The feeding treatments (types of feeding) used in the experiments were as follows: Treatments A : All instars reared on castor leaves. B : All instars reared on cassava leaves. C : 1st instar on castor leaves and remaining instars on cassava leaves. D : 2nd instar on castor leaves and remaining instars on cassava leaves. E : 3rd instar on castor leaves and remaining instars on cassava leaves. F 4th instar on castor leaves and remaining instars on cassava leaves. G 5th instar on castor leaves and remaining instars on cassava leaves. The newly hatched larvae were transferred to the wooden rearing trays (Bucrn X 40cm X 10cm) and the larvae were supplied with castor and cassava leaves as food from 1st instar to final instar. The newly hatched larvae were fed on tender chopped leaves. As the larvae grew older, more mature and bigger chopped leaves were supplied to them. Finally, 5th instar larvae were allowed to feed on full sized mature leaves. The food was supplied four times a day at six hour intervals collecting from the same plant on the same day to ensure uniformity of feeding. The observations were made on larval length, breadth and weight, cocoon weight, pupal weight, shell weight and shell ratio ( SR%), effective rate of rearing (ERR%), larval period, pupal period and adult longevity. The larval length and breadth were measured during its expanded position. The effective rate of rearing and shell ratio were calculated.

From the present study, it was evident that the castor leaf was prime food for rearing of eri-silkworm as castor Ieaf enhanced the maximum larval and pupal growth, development and finally produced maximum cocoon yield
