Effect of Seedling Age and Date of Planting on the Growth and Yield of Photoperiod-sensitive Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI)farm, Gazipur, in the late transplanted Aman season with four photoperiod-sensitive rice varieties as BRll, BR22, BR23 and Nizersail to determine the effect of seedling age and date of planting on the growth and yield of rice. Thirty-, 45-, 60- and 75- day- old seedlings were planted on 30 September. Similarly 45-, 60- and 75- day- old seedlings were planted on 15 October. Most of the varieties produced higher number of tillers, panicles and grain yield when 45- to 60- day-old seedlings were planted in both the planting dates. Higher yield was obtained from BR23 followed by BR22, Nizersail and BRll. Per day yield reduction was higher in BRI1 followed by BR22, BR23 and Nizersail for transplanting after 30 September.

Objectives:

To determine the effect of seedlings age and date of planting late T. Aman varieties on the growth and yield of rice.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the BRRI farm, Gazipur, during July to December, 1988. Of the four varieties used, BRll was weekly photoperiod-sensitive, BR22 and BR23 strongly photoperiod-sensitive and released recently for late T. Aman season. Nizersail is also strongly photoperiod-sensitive local improved variety and popular to farmers as late T. Aman variety. The first planting was done on 30 September with 30-, 45-, 60- and 75- day-old seedlings and the second planting on 15 October with 45-, 60- and 75-day-old seedlings. The experimental area was laid out in a split-plot design replicated three times with varieties in the main plots and seedling ages in the sub-plots of 20mx2.5m, with the spacing of 25cm x 20cm. In the first planting, fertilizer was applied @ 30-40-40-10 kg NPKS/ha as urea, triple superphosphate, muriate of potash and gypsum, respectively, during final land preparation. The remaining 30 kg N/ha was topdressed 15 days after planting. In the second planting, fertilizer at the rate of 45-40-40-10kg NPKS/ha was applied during final land preparation. Weeding was done at 15 and 30 DAT and 5-10 cm continuous standing water was maintained. Panicles were counted from 12 randomly selected hills per plot. For grain yield, 5m²area was harvested and weighed per plot basis. The yield was expressed in ton per hectare

Achievement/Findings:

Grain yield of BRll increased with the increase of seedling ages up to 60 days and then decreased sharply. When BR22, BR23 and Nizersail planted with more than 45-day-old seedling, the grain yield gradually decreased with advance of seedling ages. Similarly ,45-day-old seedling showed higher grain yield in the different seedling ages irrespective of varieties in the second planting. In both the planting dates, BR23 was the top yielder followed by BR22, Nizersail and BRll. Modern varieties, BR22 and BR23, had the ability to give reasonable yield 0.38-2.06 t/ha) in late planting even on 15 October using 45 to 60- day- old seedlings in the flood affected areas
