Life History of the Rice Meal. Moth Corcyra Ephalonica Stainton ( Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) on Different Food Materials

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Husked grains of rice, gram, pea, garden pea, khesari.lentil, green gram, black gram and wheat, atta, .flour and suji were taken to study the life cycle of the rice meal moth, Corcyra cephalonica Stainton. The length of the life cycle varied with the food materials. The longest life cycle was 121.5 days ( in husked pea) and the shortest was 50.7 days ( in husked gram).

Objectives:

To study the life cycle of the rice meal moth, Corcyra cephalonica Stainton.

Methodology:

Life history of the rice meal moth, Corcyra cephalonica Staint. was studied in the laboratory of the Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Atomic Energy Centre, Dacca. Fourteen kinds of food materials, such as rice (unhusked) rice ( husked), gram (unhusked), gram (husked), green gram (husked), Khesari ( husked ), lentil ( husked ), pea (hus- ked), wheat, atta, flour and suji were taken. About 10 gms of each of these was measured and placed separately inside 100 mm diameter petri dishes which were then labelled. A pair of mated females were introduced in each petridish and allowed to oviposit for Q4 hours after which they were taken out of the petridish and killed. The petridishes Were kept inside an incubator maintained at a constant temperature of 28°C. Observations were made every day in order to deter- mine the period of incubation, larval, pupal and adult stage. As it was difficult to determine incubation period inside the petridishes containing food materials, this was estimated in sepa- rate experiments. The mated females were allowed to oviposit inside empathetic dishes for 12 hours. The eggs werethen placed inside the incubator. Theincubation period was determined byre cording the time interval betweenoviposition and hatching.Another 14 petridishes, each containing 35 gms of a particular type offood mentioned above Were kept insidean incubator maintained at a constant temperature of 28°C. When the larvaein the Ist set of petridishes containing only 10 gms of food, grew to 7 days old,a batch of 25 larvae from a particular food was transferred to another petri-dish containing 35 gms of the samefood. Such larval transfers were made all the different kinds of food.
