Morphological Characteristics of Trigenomic Hexaploids and Its Crossability with Brassica Campestris

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted during rabi season of 1992-93 in the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, BAU. Mymensingh, with a view to evaluating the performance of two hexaploid lines of Brassica and its crossability with BAU·M/91 of B. campestris . The genetic materials were hexaploids (B. campestris x B. carinata; B. carinata x B. campestris) and their parents (B. campestris cv 381050; B. carinata) and the genotype BAU-M/91. The experimental materials were sown in pots. The study showed the hexaploid lines had similar morphological characteristics. but differed from parents and BAU-M/91. Plant height , primary branches and siliqua length of hexaploids were lower than their parents. Number of siliqua per plant of hexaploids were less than the parents. There were a few seeds in hexaploids, where the parents and BAU-M/91 had higher number of seeds. Seed size of the hexaploids was larger than their parents. The hexaploids required the highest number of days to maturity. The hexaploid lines showed a good crossability with the line BAU·M/ 91. It showed 88.4% of siliqua setting with 19.1% fertilized ovule/siliqua. The single F₁ seed was much smaller than the seeds of their parents.

Objectives:

To improve the drawbacks of the hexaploids by backcrossing with diserable B. campestris genotype.

Methodology:

The genetic materials were P, (B. campestris cv. 381050), P2 ( B. carinatal, HP, = trigenomic hexaploid brassica (B. campestris x B. carinata). HP2 = trigenomic hexaplo1d brassica (B. carinata x B. campes tris) and the line BAU-M/91 of B. campestris. The line BAU-M/91 was used as a check. The seeds were sown in different pots filled with a mixture of soil, well decomposed cowdung, sawdust and sand. For evaluating the morphological characteristics of hexaploid Brassica, data on germination (%), plant height, primary branches, number of siliqua per plant. siliqua length, number of seeds per siliqua, seed weight and days to maturity were collected. To study the crossability of the hexaploid lines with BAU-M/ 91 standard hybridization technique was followed. Data on number of crosses done, number o.f siliqua set, number of ovule per ovary, number of fertilized ovule per ovary, number of hybrid seeds per siliqua, number of aborted seed per siliqua and seed weight were recorded from the hybridized plants.
