Seed Germination and Dormancy in Four Varieties of Rice, Oryza Sativa L.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study conducted at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) in the Boro season, with four rice varieties indicated that the germination percentage of unhulled rice seeds of each variety even up to 40 days after anthesis was unsatisfactory but in dehulled rice seeds germination percentage increased significantly except in Nizersail. Dehulling of rice seeds by rupturing pericarp enhanced germination. After 15 days of harvest it was found that the dormancy period was longer in local variety (Nizersail) than in modern varieties (BR1, BR3 and BR9) and there was a significant correlation between germination percentage and days to germination with R² value ranged from 0.85 to 0.95.

Objectives:

To determine the seed maturation period of rice varieties and on-set of seed dormancy and its duration after harvest at storage.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the Central Station of the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Joydebpur, Gazipur during Born season of 1991-92 with four varieties of rice viz. BR1, BR3, BR9 and Nizersail. The former three varieties are photoperiod insensitive; while Nizersail is a photoperiod sensitive variety which is normally grown in Kharif II season (July-Agust to November-Decembor). The 45 days old seedlings were transplanted in the field, The data were recorded on seed dimension, germination percentage of developing seed i.e. pre-post-harvest germination. Five hundred panicles of each variety were tagged on the day of anthesis (fertilization) and continued up to four days to collect the required number of spikelets a after a specified duration with clear identification of anthesis day. The length and breadth of ten spikelets were measured with four replications from selected panicles of each harvest date to obtain the average dimension of individual grain. During the period of grain growth, a germination test was started at fifth day of anthesis and continued up to 40 th dav, to determine the initiation of germination and the highest percentage of seed germination of hulled and dehulled rice varieties, Four hundred seeds, with four replications from each variety at five day of growth interval were put for germination in sterilized Petri dishes for a period of 14 days. A first count was made at fifth day of germination test and the final count at 14 th day. Sufficient light was allowed and water added to develop normal seedlings for the determination of germination percentage. Seeds that remained ungerminated were treated with 0.2 % KNO₃ solution for another five days to determine whether dormancy prohibited germination. This was taken in to consideration during data analysis.

Achievement/Findings:

The germination test started on harvest date and continued up to 105 days at an interval of 15 days with four rice varieties under experiment indicated that there was short dormancy period in photoperiod insensitive rice varieties of BRI, BR3 and BR9 and it persisted for about 15 days in all varieties except in Nizersail, which belongs to photoperiod sensitive rice varieties and had longer period (60 days) of dormancy after harvest. The results attributed that the dormancy period in photosensitive varieties was more than that of photo insensitive or modern varieties.
