A Comparative Study on the Yield of Four Onion Cultivars

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Onion ( Allium cepa L.) is by far the most important of the bulb crops and is one of the most important vegetable crops of the world ( Thomson and Kelly, 1957). It ranks first among the spices grown in Bangladesh both in acreage and production (Anon, 1977 ). Unfortunately, the yield of local onion cultivars in Bangladesh is remarkably poor. Concerted efforts should be devoted to increase the per acre yield of this crop. Sufficient information on the performance of different cultivars of onion is lacking in our country. The present work was undertaken with a view to finding out a high yielding or otherwise, good cultivar suitable to grow in our country directly or to be used as breeding stock for improving the locally adapted cultivar.

Objectives:

To find out a high yielding cultivar suitable to grow in our country

Methodology:

The trial was conducted at the Horticulture Farm of the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh in the year 1978-79. Seeds of Faridpur Vati was collected from the National Seed Store, Nutan Bazar, Mymensingh and that of Tropic Ace, Granex Yellow and White Globe Were procured from Japan through the courtesy of "TAKII SEEDS". The experiment was laid out in randomised block design with three' replications. Seeds were sown in wen prepared seed bed on November 1, 1978 and the seedlings Were transplanted on January 2, 1979 following single row system of planting allowing spacing or 50 cm from row to row and 20 cm from one transplant to another. Thus, IS!) transplants were accommodated in each unit plot (3m x 3m). Manures andi fertilizers were applied to the soil as per recommendation of Rashid ( 1976). Gap-filling, weeding, irrigation and other cultural operations were done as. and when required. The crop was harvested on April 15, 1978. Ten plants Were randomly selected from each plot for collection of data and the collected data Were analyzed statistically and interpreted.

Achievement/Findings:

The study indicates clearly that there is ample scope for increasing the yield of onion with the introduction and cultivation of the exotic cutivars like Tropic Ace, Granex Yellow etc. Unfortunately, these cultivars do not flower under the climatic condition of Bangladesh.
