The objectives of this study were to find out the extent use of information media along with preferences made by the farmers in receiving farm information for performing various farm operations. Attempt was also made to determine the characteristics profile of the farmers as well as their relationship with the use of information media. Data were collected from 100 farmers out of 780 of four villages of Mongla thana under Bagerhat district during 20 August to 19 October 1995 by using interview schedule. 80% of the farmers had low use of media while 20% had medium use and none had high use of information media for receiving farm information.Among the information media, slightly less than two-thirds (64.67%) of the farms used individual method, compared to 18.43% and 16.90% of the farmers using group and mass media sources of information, respectively. Factors like timely availability, reliability and appropriateness of information along with credibility of the information sources were preferred by the farmers in selecting media for getting information. The characteristics like level of education, farm size, innovative ness, communication exposure and organizational participation were significantly related with their use of information media while age and agricultural knowledge of the farmers were not related.

  Database Management

1. To find out the information media used by the farmers in receiving farm information,

2. To identify the information media preferred by the farmers in receiving farm information,

3. To determine and describe some of the selected characteristics of the farmers,

4. The characteristics are age, level of education, farm size, agricultural knowledge, innovativeness, communication exposure and organizational participation and

5. To explore relationship between use of information media by the farmers and their selected characteristics as mentioned above.

Four villages namely, Katakhala, Golekonia, Digraj and Holdukonia under Mongla thana of Bagerhat district were the locale of the study. Seven hundred and eighty farmers of these villages constituted the population out of which 100 farmers were selec ted randomly with the consideration of their socioeconomic status. In the sample, the number of marginal, small, medium and rich farmer s were, 30, 35, 25 and 10, respectively. For the collection of data, an interview schedule was developed in the light of objectives of the study. The information media used by the farmers in receiving farm information was the dependent variable whereas some of the selected characteristics of the farmers such as age, level of education. f arm size, agricultural knowledge, innovativeness. communication exposure  and organizational participation  were  the  independent  variables. The dependent variable of the study was measured in two ways. Firstly, it was measured on the basis of number of contact the farmers made with selected 14 information sources for receiving farm information in general. A four point scale such as "regularly". "sometimes", "seldom" and "not at all" was used to measure the extent of use of media. Appropriate weights such as 3 for regularly , 2 for sometimes, 1 for seldom and 0 for not at all were assigned. The extent of use score of a respondent for the 14 media were added together to ascertain his use of information media score. Therefore. the information media use score of a respondent could range f rom 0 to 42, 0 indication of no use and 42  indicating  very  high use of  information  media  by  the  farmers.  Secondly,  the dependent variable was measured on the basis of number of contact the farmers made with the 14 selected information media in receiving 10 selecd farm practices related to crop production for  the  period of a cropping  season. Hence, a better partitioning was possible to find out the use of each of the information medium individually by the farmers in receiving selected information. Appropriate methods were also used to measure the independent variables of the study by developing suitable categories. Data were compiled, tabulated and coded for performing  necessary  analysis. Statistical measures such as. range, mean, percentage, frequency distribution and standard deviation were used to interpret the data. To explore relationship between dependent and independent variables, co-efficient of correlation test was done and 5 per cent level of probability was used to measure the level of significance.
