Genetic Investigation on Gestation and Birth Weight of Indigenous Cows and Fl Graded Calves

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Indigenous cows numbering 378 and the calves born out of these cows sired by Sahiwal bull were studied for fertility, gestation length and birth weight. The conception rate was found to be 74% and the number of services required per conception was l.35. The average gestation length was noticed to be 280.9 days on the basis of female calves born and 281.46 days on the basis of male calves born. Average birth weight for male calves was 3571 pounds and that of female claves was 33.75 pounds. The paternal half-sib heritabilities as calculated for gestation length and birth weight were found to be from 0.11 to 0.60 and from 0.11 to 0.42 respectively. Significant correlations between gestation length and birth weight were obtained from Simla areas and non significant for Kazirsimla areas. Regression coefficients for these traits very from 0.046 to 0.529.

Objectives:

To investigate into different productive aspects of indigenous cattle.

Methodology:

Native cows owned by villagers numbering 378 were inseminated by the semen of 4 Sahiwal bull during the period from 1975 to 1979. Insemination records were maintained for each cow. Gestation length in days were also recorded. Cows were then divided into two groups on the basis of male and female calves born. Gestation length was then arranged in order of sexes of the calves born. Birth weight of 153 male calves and 125 female calves were recorded. All cows included in this project for the period were cared and fed by their owner at their homestead. No scientific feeding and management were practiced in rearing the cows. Averages, standard deviation (SO), Co-efficient 0 f variations ( C. V ) Co- efficient of correlations (r) and regression co-efficient ( b) were calculated using appropriate statistical formula as mentioned by Steel and Torrie ( 1960 ). The heritability were estimated using paternal half-sib correlation as outlined by Backer (1964). Standard error of heritability were calculated .
