Inheritance of Yield and Yield Components in Spring Wheat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Gene actions for grain yield and its components in spring wheat were studied in F₁ and F₁ generation of a diallel cross. Both additive and non additive gene actions controlled the inheritance of spikes per plant, grains per spike, 100-grain weight, plant height, biological yield, harvest index and grain yield. Predominance of additive gene action was observed for yield components, whereas grain yield and biological yield were mainly controlled by non-additive gene action. All the characters were highly heritable in broad sense . In narrow sense, plant height in F_i generation and plant height and grains per spike in F₂generation were highly heritable. Parent.offspring regressions were significant for all characters. There was improvement of parent offspring regressions in F ₂generation over F ₁ generation,

Objectives:

Gene action for yield and yield components were studied from a set of spring wheat varieties .

Methodology:

Nine varieties of spring wheat were crossed in a diallel system excluding the reciprocals in 1982-83. The varieties were Balaka, Taichung 29, pima 77, Nobre, Janak, Condor, Jaral, Kalyan sona and Sonalika. The parents and their F ₁ s were grown in the field in single row plots of 1.50 meter in length in winter of 1983 84. In the next growing season, 1984-85, the parents and F₂ s were grown in the plots of 1.50 m x 1.25 m consisting of 5 rows in each. In both the years the experiments were conducted in randomized complete block design with 3 replications. Data on yield and its different morpho-physiological yield components were collected from the sample plants. In F ₁ generation, 10 sample plants were taken from each F₂ plot. The data were analyzed for combining ability. The combining ability variance were translated into genetic variance and the heritability values were estimated for each character.

Achievement/Findings:

Biological yield and grain yield were generally considered as poorly heritable characters. These information suggest that simply inherited yield components are generally highly heritable. But complex characters like biological yield and grain yield are usually poorly heritable. Because these characters are controlled by large number of polygenes. Cumulated environmental effects on each of these polygenes gave the poor heritability estimates for these two characters. In the present study high estimates of heritability for primary yield components and harvest index Indicate that selection for these components would be effective. Improvement in grain yield might be achieved through the selection of these yield components.
