Yield Potentiality Study of 32 Exotic Varieties of Potato Tested for Three Successive Years

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Study with thirty two exotic varieties of potato was conducted in the Jessore Regional Research Station of B. A. R. I. during the period of three Years, 1977-78, 1978-79 and 197-.80. The object was to See the potentiality of the varieties in regard to yield tested during the three years trial. Imported potatoes from the Netherlands were directly planted in the field in 1977-78 while progeny of the Ist year crop following preservations in the local cold storage gave seeds of the 2nd generation potato which again left the planting materials for the 3rd year crop planted in 1979-80. After compilation and analysis of the yield data of three years together, the F value was found to be highly significant indicating strong variation in yield among varieties which, therefore, necessitated a categorical arrangement of the same into a number of groups, Cardinal, a red skinned variety topped the list producing about 30 tons of tubers per hectare followed by Mirka the 2nd highest one and thirdly, Kronia and Baraka jointly stood in the next position.

Objectives:

Methodology:

A study with 32 exotic varieties of potato was conducted in the year 1977-78 which gave the 1st generation crop; the seeds were imported from the Netherlands in the same year before the season started. The experiment was conducted in the Jessore Regional Research Station of BARI Seeds of the 1st year's crop from 32 varieties were kept in the local cold storage and again planted in the next season (1978-79) to see how they behave in the 2nd year. The growing population was called the 2nd generation crop. In this way, a 3rd generation crop was raised in the 3rd year ( 1979-80) also with the seeds of 2nd year's produce. The planting dates for the Ist, 2nd and 3rd generation experiments were 2.12.77, 20.11.78 and 13.11.79 respectively. Soil of experimental plot was sandy- loam in texture. Tuber'! were planted in a unit plot size of 4.5m):( 3.6m. Six rows were made in each .plot all an apart of 60 em. Fertilizers were placed in the furrows and mixed with soil and finally tubers were put in the lines after every 30 cm. In the first two seasons. fertilizer were applied at the rate of 125, 85 and 166 kg. of N, P and K per hectare respectively. While in the last year ( 1979-80), the fertilizer dose was a little high; N, P and K being 135'95 and 180kg/ha respectively. Half of the urea and the whole quantity of TSP and MP were applied in the lines during plantation of tubers and the rest half of the nitrogenous fertilizer was given to the furrows, made for irrigation channel, 45 days after plantation of tubers. Immediately after top-dressing irrigation was applied. The intercultural operations like mulching, berthing etc. were done timely and properly.

The lowest yield giving varieties were Ostara and Monitor followed by Bintje and then a group of varieties namely, Diana, Colma, Murillo, Wilja and Sirtema.
