A Comparative Study of Single and Combinations of Different Dietary Grain Sources on the Performance of Laying Hens

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment with seventy two Rhode Island Red pullets and nine Rhode Island Red Cockerels was carried out to compare the effect of feeding single and combination of grains on body weight, egg production, egg weight, feed efficiency, feed cost and mortality of laying hens. The birds were divided into three treatment groups. The experiment was continued for five periods of 30 days each. The average body weight per bird was highest in treatment number 2 (1.91 Kg.) and lowest in treatment number 3 (1.85 Kg.). The average egg production per bird was highest in treatment number 3 (41.18 percent hen day production). The results of the experiment suggest that the birds received the combination of grains showed better performances than the birds receiving single grain in the diet.

Objectives:

To compare the effects of feeding maize and wheat singly or in combination on body weight, egg production and feed efficiency of Rhode Island Red Layers.

Methodology:

A comparative study of feeding maize and wheat and a combination of two cereals on the 24 weeks old pullets up to 5 periods of 30 days each was made. Seventy two randomly selected Rhode Island Red pullets and nine Rhode Island Red Cockerels of 34 weeks old reared in the Bangladesh Agricultural University Poultry Farm, Mymensingh ; were used in this experiment during the year 1971. The birds which were used in the experiment were picked up from the farm for collecting data. The birds were leg banded for identification and were divided equally into three treatments with 24 pullets and 3 cockerels in each treatment in a restrictively randomized fashion and were placed in three separate pens in the laying house. Composition of a ration used for different treatments has been shown in Table 1. All diets were iso-caloric and iso-nitrogenous, To make the diets iso- caloric some amount of vegetable fat ( soybean oil) was added to it. Feed and water were available to the birds ad-libitum. Green vegetables were supplied to the birds at liberty. All the birds were vaccinated against Ranikhet disease before putting them in the experimental pens. The cost of feed to produce eggs for each treatment was calculated. Necessary statistical analysis were made.
